While not particularly renowned for its shopping, the country has a range of pleasant markets, both in the larger cities, such as Montevideo and Colonia del Sacramento, and the smaller towns where unique products may be easier to come by.

Leather products, amethyst jewelry, and suede jackets are among the most popular bargains, in addition to the wide variety of colorful paintings, handicrafts, and wool products on sale at the markets.

Within the Uruguay capital of Montevideo, there are numerous Western-style malls, including Montevideo Shopping Center and Punta Carretas Shopping, which house cinemas, supermarkets, and a wide range of food outlets.

Several boutique shops have started to emerge throughout the capital city, selling the latest in fashionable clothing, one-off handicrafts, and many other products that would be suitable to take back home as wraps, such as ponchos and handmade scarves.

Outside of the capital, some of the best shopping can be found in Punta del Este, particularly down Calle Goriero, which is arrayed with European-style boutiques and stores selling traditional products.

A weekend crafts market is held on Saturdays and Sundays at the Plaza Artigas, where many quality bargains can be bought here, given a little bartering; while down Avenida Roosevelt, you can find the massive Punta Shopping Mall, with over a hundred shops and a 12-screen cinema.

When shopping in the markets, feel free to bargain. If you want to get an idea of how much you should be paying, visit the state-run craft markets, which have steady rates. Shops here are mostly open from 8:00 a.m. to noon and from 2:00 p.m to 7:00 p.m on weekdays.

Most are closed at least once a week, usually on Sundays, but you will still find something open every day of the week.
