The University of Monastir’s proud heritage of academic excellence dates back to its founding in 2004 (Decree n° 2102 of 2004). Its foundation was part of the reform that the Tunisian university educational system perceived. Its creation aims at developing the service quality under decentralization, by improving the efficiency as part of a new approach that takes into account the scientific, academic and social considerations. The University of Monastir is today a major university in Tunisia and it plays a central role in preparing future generations for high-ranking positions in a wide range of fields.
Monastir, also called Mistīr, is a city on the central coast of Tunisia, in the Sahel area, some 20 kilometres south of Sousse and 162 kilometres south of Tunis. Traditionally a fishing port, Monastir is now a major tourist resort. It is the capital of Monastir Governorate. Monastir is a peninsula surrounded by the mediterranean sea on three sides and forming, to the south, the Gulf of Monasti of the same name, which extends to Cap of Ras Dimass. It offers diverse landscapes, in particular its sandy and rocky beaches as well as a cliff stretching over nearly six kilometers. Monastir enjoys a dry mediterranean climate with hot summers, extremely mild winters, much sunshine and low rainfall year-round.
