With the support of His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Crown Prince of Ras Al Khaimah, the University was initially established as George Mason University, Ras Al Khaimah campus (GMU-RAK) in 2005. After George Mason University decided to discontinue its operations in Ras Al Khaimah in 2009, the Crown Prince decreed the establishment of the American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) in the same location. Students who had enrolled in GMU-RAK were given the opportunity to continue at AURAK, transfer to GMU’s main campus in Virginia, USA, or transfer to another institution.
University provides dormitory accommodation which is conveniently placed right next to the university and has all the facilities you will need such as swimming pools, sports yards, and 24-hour security.
The dorms are also very conducive to all the amenities included, like heating, wireless internet, and private bathrooms. Prices of the various dormitory options available range from (1,496 to 2,992)AED / Semester inclusive of all other dorm fees and with 5% VAT available.
On the other hand, off-campus accommodation (within range of the university) with similar features is available, with prices depending on the specific need of the student. Costs also include water and electricity bills. There is also a chance to rent accommodation from a private landlord or estate agent.
Prices fluctuate greatly depending on the location and quality of the apartment, however, the price of housing here averages around 200 to 350 EUR per month
That said, students are often encouraged to stay on campus for at least a year as they find their way around and are hence able to find help from university staff at any time.
In case of assistance to acquire off-campus accommodation, University does assist its students.
Sport is an integral part of the AURAK learning experience. Facilities vary at each college, however ongoing activities allow students to take part in a wide range of sports throughout the academic year.
Students are encouraged to participate in sporting activities in order to develop teamwork and leadership skills, in addition to the health benefits.
AURAK has football fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, swimming pools, athletic tracks and/or trails for jogging and walking and provides sports instructors to assist students with their individual or team activities.
American University of Ras Al Khaimah has several modern cafeteria outlets which serve full meals, and refreshments throughout the day as well as providing a comfortable and relaxing social environment.
The various campus canteens are open on from as early as 0700hrs till late and offer different servings 3 times a day, breakfast, lunch, and dinner and have a very easy-going social scenery allowing students to relax and chat (Wi-Fi access points available).
The dishes served include but are not limited to meat (all sorts), rice, pasta, potatoes, and dairy, pizza and vegetarian meals. On the go quick bites and snacks, plus Hot and cold beverages are also included as well.
Meals are prepared in a professional, manner by well-trained and friendly kitchen staff and taste delicious.
Ras Al Khaimah is the northernmost emirate of the United Arab Emirates. It's known for its gulf beaches. In the capital city of the same name, the National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah occupies a centuries-old fort. The museum features regional history and archaeological exhibits. Nearby is the large, traditional Mohammed bin Salem Mosque. Northeast, the mountaintop Dhayah Fort dates from the 19th century.
