About TFYR Macedonia

An ancient region of lakes, mountains, and fiercely independent people, Macedonia has seen the world's greatest empires come and vanish over its turbulent 2,500-year history.

Like where would Mediterranean legendaries be without Alexander the Great? An independent republic since 1991, the Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia came alive after years of Communist rule and is well on the way to establishing itself as a tourism center for its rich culture and awesome natural attractions.

Architecture, music, poetry, and art are highlights of its long heritage, while magnificent Orthodox churches, monasteries equally make magnificent scenery attention.

Almost the last undiscovered country in Europe, Macedonia is a treasured gem of idyllic villages untransformed for decades, rich historical sites, and stunning, unspoiled mountains, lakes, and river valleys.

Life moves more casual here, to a rhythm commanded by the seasons and the climate, although the cities are ultra-modern with 21st-century amenities.

Now is the time to travel this unique country before everyone learns of its interesting beauty, a blend of old and new and a combination of Mediterranean, Turkish, Albanian, and Macedonian influences and cultures.

Western Macedonia is the major tourist region, although as yet, only seven-hundred thousand travelers come annually, a bonus for those who hate crowded historic spots crammed with sightseers.

The capital, Skopje, is set in the Povardarie north-central area on the Vardar River and provides a huge selection of hotels from five-star resorts to budget guest lodges.

Hospitality is traditional, and the people here are proud of their country and overjoyed to share its beauties with the world. Historic hamams are a seldom treat, with the 15th century Daut Pasha Hamam built for use by the ruler’s harem.

TFYR Macedonia’s countryside is marked with charming villages and remnants of its long history, such as the still-alluring Marko Monastery, the village of Skopsa with its medieval religious structures, Stone Age archaeological features, and Byzantine fortifications.

Matka Gorge is home to many medieval monasteries and an interesting place for hiking, while all over the towns and villages are stunning bazaars and street markets, with Ohrid popularly known for its jewelry and pearls.

Visitors are rarely seen outside Skopje and Ohrid, but day trips open up a world of interesting contrasts.

About the Macedonia's Economy

You do not worry anymore about the economic performance information for your country of study abroad choice. RocApply dedicates this guide to inform you of the facts you need to know about the economy of TFYR Macedonia!

Let’s get started!

Economic Summary

Early parliamentary elections were held on July 15, 2020, and North Macedonia’s Parliament elected a fresh government led by Prime Minister Zoran Zaev of the Social Democratic SDSM Party on August 30, 2020.

The coalition government comprises representatives from the Albanian DUI party and enjoys a thin majority of 62 out of 120 members.

The strategic goals outlined in the Government’s program include membership strategy in NATO and the European Union, good neighborly and interethnic relations, internal cohesion, actions against the recent coronavirus pandemic, and new incentives and determination to create more dynamic economic development, sustainable development, a modern education system, effective rule of law, and strong institutions.

The proposed initiative narrates in detail the areas of the business environment, support to firms, an innovative economy, social policy, transport, agriculture, health (including the fight against the pandemic), education, sports and recreation, democracy and civil society, culture, gender equality, the judiciary and legal matters, the fight against corruption, public administration, decentralization and local governments, ethnic connections, the environment, and energy amongst others.

Lessening the exponent's rates of unemployment from which the Macedonian economy suffers is a leading priority of the Government.

The large share of the working population who are inactive, occasional work represents output overlooked and income lost.

Moreover, the important goal of sharing the benefits of growth more equitably between people and regions proves increasingly elusive when many citizens are trapped in long-term joblessness, a state closely linked to household poverty.

It seems that the formal job market in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia has doomed. What actions can and should the Government take to alleviate this problem?

As the authorities thrive to solidify peace and stability, quickening remaining structural reforms, and move policies and institutions towards European culture, the problem of high unemployment can’t be left unaddressed.

But reform of labor market institutions and policies is only one section of the solution, and not the most important.

The Government of Macedonia has limited ability to raise labor demand directly. Overall development and job creation by the private sector will be the only long-term mitigation plan.

Growth has been limited since independence by low investment initiatives, and to remove this constraint, the Government should be focused on ways to improving education, create a supportive investment ecosystem (particularly for foreign investment and small and medium enterprises), and gravitate free trade as part of integration into European markets.
