RocApply dedicates this guide to students whose itch for shopping needs a tame.  TFYR Macedonia has something perfect meant to satisfy the crave!

The old souks and winding lanes of the country with its traditional mosques and inns have particular streets given to spices, gold, silverware, and crafts. There're beautiful jewelry and perfume shops, filled with racks of blended oils and fragrances and wonderful spots.

The country is home to everything from mighty modern malls to traditional souks when it comes to shopping, meaning that the island is bound to cater to every taste.

Shopping here in TFYR Macedonia is much more than a pastime it is a way of life. Fridays and Saturdays, the days that comprise the Macedonian weekend, see commercial areas teeming with friends of all nationalities who are there for the bargains, the restaurants, and to meet and greet friends.

The hub for shopping in Macedonia is the interesting markets and bazaars located in Skopje, Orhid, and every other city in the country. The two major cities have obligatory malls, more varied in products than many other Western countries and with prices to match every shopaholic’s taste and pocket.

From fashions and souvenirs to sweet honey and curative, herbal mountain teas, there’s a lot of things to bring back with you. The best bargains in and around Ohrid are the region’s famous pearls, located in necklaces and jewelry in a range of shapes and textures.

The traditional terracotta casserole dishes and jugs are situated in all the bazaars and are useful as decorative products as well as for cooking.

The Old Bazaar in Skopje is Macedonia’s largest, offering everything from stone-set filigree silver to traditional, handmade, quilts, rugs, and many other handicrafts. Beautifully embroidered textiles are another great buy, and the tiny restaurants, coffee, and tea rooms are a blessing for sore feet, providing traditional foods as well as glasses of the local firewater.

Shopping in Ohrid is as much fun at the bazaar as it is in the capital, although the market itself is far much smaller, covering just one street. Woodcarvings and copperware are famous souvenirs, while pearl jewelry is popularly made by two local families, Filevi and Talevi, masters of the trade for many years.

St Kliment Street is the heart of the shopping district, with many streets of boutiques, interesting cafes, and stores selling traditional musical instruments, another unique souvenir of your stay. When shopping in the local markets, feel free to bargain.

If you want to get an idea of how much you should be paying, visit the state-run craft markets, which have steady rates. Shops here are mostly open from 7:30 a.m. to noon and from 2:00 p.m to 6:00 p.m on weekdays.

Most are closed at least once a week, usually on weekends, but you will still find something open every day of the week. Carry your bag and go shop here without any fear or fret, we've got your back covered at RocApply.

"I enjoy shopping and I found it affordable but some of the clothes are definitely not of the highest quality." - Hassan from Turkey
