The Higher Education Institution in Sao Tome and Principe is mainly made up of one university, created by a combination of various institutions of higher education. Offering internationally recognized degrees.

The University of Sao Tome- is a public institution. It is the main institution in the country dedicated to research and teaching, established in 2014. It was formed by the merging of three institutions. The university covers the following scientific areas:

• Human and social sciences
• Exact sciences and engineering
• Sciences of nature, life, and environment
• Economic and political sciences and law

The university offers courses inHuman and Social Sciences and Arts, Exact Sciences and Engineering, Licentiate in mathematics, Licentiate in physics, Licentiate in agronomy, Licentiate in Public Relations and communications, Licentiate in economics, Licentiate in hotel management, Licentiate in computer engineering, Licentiate in electronic engineering and telecommunications, Licentiate in systems and information technology, Licentiate in Portuguese language, Licentiate in history, Licentiate in French language, Licentiate in geography, Licentiate in law

Health Sciences: Licentiate in management administration in health services, Bachelor in anesthesia, Bachelor in nursing, Bachelor in clinical analysis, Complement on the secondary education in pharmacy, Middle courses on nursing, Specialization in surgical instrumentation, Middle courses on maternal and child health

Education: a complement of licentiate in primary education, licentiate in primary education, initial training, bachelor in primary education, bachelor in children’s education.

The University of Sao Tome is made up of the Polytechnic Institute of Sao Tome which was mainly for training primary and secondary teachers, it was later upgraded to offer courses in Portuguese, French, history, geography, mathematics, modern literature, business, and administration

• The Superior Institute for Education and Communication- for teachers of basic education
• The Superior Institute Of Health Sciences-which offers bachelors in nursing, clinical analysis, health services management, and other health-related programs.
• The Research Center for Development- it was founded in 1988 and deals with agro-related areas and areas to do with food.
• The Lusiada University of Sao Tome was created as a branch of a Portuguese private institution. The institution id a business-oriented one and provides a bachelor's training in economics, sciences, business sciences, law, and computer sciences.
