The vision of the UJ is to be "an international University of choice, anchored in Africa, dynamically shaping the future". The mission can be described as follows: "Inspiring its community to transform and serve humanity through innovation and the collaborative pursuit of knowledge". These are underpinned by four values, namely: imagination, conversation, regeneration, and ethical foundation.

The six strategic objectives provide a focused means for realizing the Vision, Mission and Values of the University as set out above. They further represent a re-working of the original UJ Strategic Thrusts 2020 in the context of a wider positioning of the University as "The Pan-African" Centre for Critical Intellectual Inquiry, with the primary goal of achieving global excellence and stature.

UJ is guided by six strategic objectives inclusive of the following. The six strategic objectives are:

  • Excellence in Research and Innovation.
  • Excellence in Teaching and Learning.
  • An International Profile for Global Excellence and Stature.
  • Enriching Student-Friendly Learning and Living Experience.
  • Active National and Global Reputation Management, and
  • Fitness for Global Excellence and Stature (GES).

The University has 8 Faculties that are inclusive of: Education, Law, Humanities, Fine Arts, Design and Architecture, Health Sciences, Science, Engineering and the Built Environment as well as the College of Business and Economics, housing the newly established Johannesburg Business School.

Food at University of Johannesburg (Auckland Park Bunting Road Campus)

There are quite a number of food services available at the University of Johannesburg that are mainly found at all the four campuses. At UJ, for example, there is Gift of the Givers (GOG) meals initiative, which provides meals to students at the University’s four campuses – APK, APB, DFC and SWC. The GOG initiative is currently assisting students with two meals a day. That happens in the morning for breakfast and also in the afternoon.

To supplement your groceries, you may also inquire about the food parcels that are provided to students by UJ’s Student Affairs. The food items include basic breakfast items such as Movite, Jungle Oats, instant porridge and perishable food like tin beans.

If the food parcel that you receive from Student Affairs is not enough, try seeking assistance from UJ’s Remember and Give (RAG), which can also be found in all of the University’s four campuses near the Student Affairs offices.

Compare prices from the food outlets near your accommodation or campus and identify the one that best fits your budget in order to help you save money. Another way to save money when comparing prices is to make sure that you visit your nearest market place to see if you can find cheaper deals than your closest food stores.

Transportation at University of Johannesburg (Auckland Park Bunting Road Campus)

If you have a driving license the easiest way to maneuver around the University of Johannesburg is by car. There are numerous car rental companies at both Johannesburg airports, and most offer drop-off or pick-up points in Rosebank or Sandton. When driving, plan your route before setting off, and store valuable items out of sight.

A fun transport option for a short journey is the enterprising fleets of tuk–tuks based in Sandton Central and Melville. While speeding around corners and chugging up steep hills on the back of a glorified motorbike might not be to everyone's tastes, they do make traveling between suburbs much easier. Fares start from R40.

Commonly known quite confusingly as 'taxis', mini-bus taxis are by far the most widely used public transport option in Joburg. Running throughout the city is a complex system of privately owned mini-bus which ferry commuters to all corners of the city, which can be very confusing to navigate without the help of a local. A complex system of hand/finger signals is used by passengers waiting for a 'taxi' to show to passing drivers which direction they want to go.

Once inside pass your fare forward to towards the driver or whoever is collecting money in the front seat. Note that unlike in other countries that use these mini-bus systems there is no list of destinations or prices posted in the window so you will need to rely on your fellow passengers for this information. You need to call out to the driver in advance when you want to get off - giving a landmark, such as 'after the robots' is usually the easiest.

About Johannesburg

Johannesburg is well over 120 years old (founded on 4 October 1886 during the gold rush), it is still one of the youngest major cities in the world. It is most famous for its catchy lyrics that embody post-apartheid township culture.

While Johannesburg is also known as the City of Gold, or 'eGoli' because of its beginnings as a gold-mining town, it is known fondly to locals by the shortened 'Joburg', or now more popularly as 'Jozi'. Johannesburg was home to Nelson Mandela and icons of the Nobel Peace Prize winner and freedom fighter are seen all over the city.

From the Apartheid Museum, the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton to inner-city statues and street art. With the rich archaeological site known as the Cradle of Humankind on the outskirts of the city, it’s not surprising that 40% of the planet’s human ancestor fossils have been discovered in the Jo’burg area.

Johannesburg is the home of Kwaito music, a catchy genre of African house music that was born in the 90s and has become a South African phenomenon. It is most famous for its catchy lyrics that embody post-apartheid township culture.

Situated in the heart of the city is the University of Johannesburg (UJ), a center for international learning and progress, Apply on RocApply today to UJ and let us help you turn your dreams into a lived reality.
