Secondary Education in Libya encompasses Grades 7 to 12. It covers six to seven years divided into a three-year cycle that concludes the compulsory education and a three to four-year senior program. Lower secondary school lasts for 3 years and is usually classified under basic education while the upper secondary is sometimes called intermediate education and lasts 4 years.

Those who do not enroll in the general secondary have the chance to go into vocational programs ranging from one to three years in length.

Lower Secondary School (Preparatory Education)

This is a 3 years program for grades 7 to 12 or 13. The Curriculum here offers subjects such as the Arabic language, Koranic studies, and Islamic morals, Jamahiriyi society, English, mathematics, history, geography, biology, chemistry, physics, principles of technology, art, music, and physical education, to mention but a few. Grade 9 marks the completion of the basic and compulsory education cycle, upon which students will take examinations for the Basic Education Certificate.

Upper Secondary School (Intermediate Education)

Intermediate education extends from three to four years and is provided at general secondary school, for Sciences and arts, and specialized secondary schools for economics, biology, arts and media, social sciences and engineering, and vocational training centers and institutes. The general secondary stream lasts for 3 years while the technical education lasts 4 years, and 2 to 3 years in vocational secondary schools. The first year of the intermediate cycle at general and specialized schools is common for all students and covers subjects such as Islamic education, Arabic, English, politics, physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, art, physical education, and military education. general secondary Students may specialize in the literary or scientific branches with the literary branch encompassing history, geography, philosophy, sociology; and the scientific branch encompassing physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics. to complete the intermediate cycle students sit for a final exam and successful ones are awarded the Secondary Education Certificate.

Benghazi European School

Subjects in key stage 3 include English, mathematics, science, History and Geography, Art, Information, and Communication Technology.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11)- this is a 2-year program from year 10 to year 11. Students take the International General Certificate of International Education (IGCSE)  examinations, at the age of 16. Subjects here include Arabic as a first language, art, and design, biology, business studies, chemistry, English language: b, English language: English literature, french, geography, history, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Italian, Mathematics, Physical Education, and physics.

Advanced Level- this is a program for years 12 or 13, where students will prepare to take the GCE Advanced Level examinations. Advanced levels are offered in subjects including Arabic, Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, English Literature, French, History, Mathematics, and Physics.

Prospective students- Admission to the school is based on entrance tests in English and Mathematics together with a student interview. A copy of the student’s last school report is required to take the tests and other school-specific requirements.

Sports and extracurricular activities- students can enjoy a variety of activities offered by the school. These include soccer, chess, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, and science activities, to mention but a few.

 

International School Benghazi

This is a school in Benghazi that offers education from the  Foundation Stage to Year 13. Key Stage 5 (Years 12-13)- year 12 students will studying up to 5 subjects at the AS level. Year 13 students will take the Advanced Level studies. They may continue with all 5 subjects but most students focus on 3 main subjects that they will be examined for.

Prospective Students- prospective students will be assessed through an entrance test to assess them concerning their records from the previous school. The following documents are required:

  • One copy of the student's passport
  • One copy of the student’s birth certificate
  • One copy of each parent’s Passport and Visa.
  • One copy of the school final report for all children entering Year 1 and above (in English).
  • Original Transfer Certificate from the previous school (only after confirmation of admission)

This is a Canadian international school located in tripoli that offers a unique blend of the Ontario curriculum and the Libyan curriculum.
