About Saint Barthelemy
Saint-Barthelemy is 21 square kilometer of luxury, tranquillity and indulgence. Daydream by the yachts moored in Gustavia’s port, lose your bearings at Colombier’stoposcope, and follow the path hugging the pebble beach all the way to the natural diving pools at Grand Fond. Take horse rides in the Anse des Flamands, and dive with turtles in Saint-Jean.
St. Barth was originally inhabited by Arawak Indians; they were followed by the Caribs, who first met Christopher Columbus when he arrived in 1493. He named the island for his brother Bartolomeo. The French made initial unsuccessful attempts to take it until some determined Huguenots from Normandy persevered and conqoured. Later, Frenchmen made it a way station as they plundered Spanish galleons, which adds to St. Barth's lore.
In 1784, France traded the island to Sweden, and the capital was named Gustavia in reverence of its king, Gustavia III and declared a free port. To the delight of shoppers, it remains free. In 1878, it was sold back to France, but charming reminders preserve the encient in street signs and the Swedish Cemetery. Those touches delightfully enhance St. Barth's European ambience.
Tourism took hold when Remy de Haenen, an eccentric Dutch aviator, landed his plane at what is now the only airport. He later became the first hotelier and the island's mayor. Remy hosted the era's luminaries he was a friend of Howard Hughes and Hollywood starlets. The '60s brought the Rockefellers and Rothschilds and saw the arrival of the first jet-setters here. Thus, the mystique was created. The '70s brought spectacular yachts like Onassis's Christina into the Lilliputian Harbor in Gustavia.
The yachts continue to come, and in the evening the twinkling lights are super. During Christmas and New Year's St. Barth's signature season the island gets an extra measure of glare. Contingents of the world's celebrities come to party, dine in its world-class hotels, shop the designer boutiques and, of course, to see and be seen. Others come seeking privacy and relaxation. They swim and sun at the more guarded beaches, stroll Gustavia and dine quietly, poolside, under the stars in their hillside villas.

Saint Barthelemy is a small tourism-oriented island in the Caribbean with notable natural scenery. Its maritime domain is preserved with the setting up of five reserves. Ample spaces of wild nature enable the tourists who have the privilege of staying there to discover a stunning biodiversity. The 25 square kilometer surface area of this miniature paradise is shared by 8,500 inhabitants.
Multiple islets lsituated on the border offer heavenly mooring spots to navigators in search of nature and tranquillity. Humid areas, salt marshes and ponds are among the many sites of exceptional beauty for those eager to see birds in the phantasmagorical lights of dawn or dusk. Guests can enjoy activities related to the environment, sea sports, fishing and diving.
A proper management of the Marine Reserve and the professional starting to value the notion of sustainable development now enable better resource management and preservation of the biodiversity. Numerous species have returned to the island, namely green turtles, which are present in numbers in the bay of Colombier, leatherback turtles and reef sharks, which are regularly spotted by divers.
The economy of the island nation is based upon high-end tourism and duty-free luxury commerce, serving visitors primarily from North America. The luxury hotels and villas host 70,000 travelers each year with another 130,000 arriving by boat. Population was 7,209 (July 2016 approximation). The relative seperation and high cost of living inhibits mass tourism.
The construction and public sectors also enjoy remarkeable investment in support of tourism. With less fresh water resources, all food must be imported, as must all energy resources and most manufactured goods. The tourism sector creates a strong employment demand and pulls labor from Brazil and Portugal. The country’s currency is the Euro.
