Application Requirements in Portugal

Applicants may choose from the different university options and partner institutions in Portugal, follow the step by step admission process and submit all the required documents for admission.

Post-graduate study applicants may be required to translate their relevant documents to Portuguese for easy accessing of their grades only if asked by their institution of choice.

Many universities in Portugal are very good at comparing and equating diplomas, transcripts to their Portuguese standards for entry admissions. Which means that foreign-obtained diplomas, transcripts, and qualifications will suffice and are accepted by most universities and institutions in Portugal.

Bachelor Requirements

  • Transcripts of upper or senior secondary school education
  • An entrance examination might be required from international students by some universities
  • Students from countries in the EU can just present the necessary high school equivalents from their home nations.
  • International students may take these exams at the embassy or consular in their respective home nations.

Post-graduate (Masters, Ph.D.) Requirements

  • Transcripts from completed bachelors and/or masters program
  • Masters applicants must possess a relevant bachelors degree
  • Ph.D. applicants must possess a relevant masters degree
  • Many Portuguese universities require that the documents be converted to measure with Portuguese standards
  • Relevant documents from EU member states do not need to be converted

Other necessary documents required for entry admissions include;

  • Filled and signed application form
  • Relevant certificates, diplomas, certifications proving that the applicant has completed the needed secondary and university educations.
  • Transcripts showing all the courses and grades obtained
  • A personal statement from the applicant reiterating their intentions with pursuing a program with the university
  • Some programs request a CV or Resume
  • Application fee payment receipt
  • Language Eligibility

Portuguese Language; at entry levels (bachelors) many universities require that the student has ample knowledge of the Portuguese language, as it is the language of instruction for many institutions in the country. A proficiency test in Portuguese is required with B1/B2 minimum results.

English Language; for post-graduate levels, programs are mainly designed for international students so many of them have English as the medium of instruction.

Non-native English speakers must provide proof of their knowledge of the English language. This is done via commonly accepted proficiency exams like IELTS and TOEFL. Other exams that are accepted by Portuguese ınstitutions include CPE/CAE and PTE.
