Do not be fooled by the rough past the Omani have gone through, the Omani are very simple and well-structured people whose focus is on developing an environment conducive for all.

The country's culture is one of the most distinct and unique on the African continent.

As with the rest of the Arab world, Omani culture and tradition is closely tied to the Islamic faith. Most the people here are Muslims. However, the majority of them practice Ibadi, a form of Islam which incepted in the country and is distinct from the majority denominations of Sunni and Shia.

Omani however are less judgemental when it come to personal belief preferences and welcome diversity in opinion across the country!

The people are very humble and down-to-earth making the country a very perfect destination for a semester abroad. However, two very important aspects of Omani culture are dignity and honor.

They regard these values so strongly that insults and name-calling can be a basis for taking someone for prosecution. Criticisms, whether personal, national, or superficial such as appearance or character, are generally not welcome.

Rules of etiquette when traveling in Muslim nations generally apply to traveling in here. Women must dress modestly outside the comforts of modern hotels, ideally clothing that covers shoulders and legs and certainly not wear that are form-fitting or too tight, while men must wear trousers and sleeved shirts.

Outside the main towns of Muscat and Salalah, there is strong segregation in society between genders. In most contexts, it may be regarded as inappropriate for men to interact with the opposite gender.
