Norway Student Visa Requirements

Norway Student Visa Requirements

As with many other developed countries, there are factors in place to better regulate immigration affairs, the same can be said for Norway. Any student who wishes to travel to the country for education purposes may require a student visa, which is formally called a student residence permit.

A student visa is not required for students from the following countries;

Nordic countries – Denmark, Sweden, Finland or Iceland. Student permits are not needed for citizens from these countries but they are likely required to do an identification check at any tax offices or report their stay for more than six months.

EU/EFTA/EEA countries – countries in the EU or EEA or European countries that have trade agreements with Norway, students from these areas do not need any permits or visas and can reside and study for up to ninety days without any visa.

However, if they will be studying in Norway for more than ninety days then they are required to register at the Norweigian Immigration and report to the local police with important documentation.

Every other student from that are not from the countries mentioned above, will have to apply at the Norweigian consulate or embassy in their home country. Before you apply you must’ve been accepted to study in any of the institutions in Norway for a specific period of time

They will have to present the following important paperwork so as to be considered for the visa.

The requirements include:

  • The filled-out application form
  • Proof of payment of the application fee (usually 5,300 kr)
  • Passport or travel document (must be valid for at least 6 months)
  • 2 recent passport photographs (using a white background)
  • Letter of acceptance from the university
  • Proof of financial support for the total duration of the study must also be able to support any additional family member and must be in a Norwegian operated bank account. Many universities provide their students with these banking details to ease the process. The money available must be upwards of 116,369 kr (roughly $14,350) for a full school year.
  • Documents that show that there is a suitable accommodation arrangement in place
  • A return ticket reservation that shows the students’ intention to return to their home country after their permit runs out.
  • Properly filled and signed UDI paperwork which must be presented with the other requirements.

The applicant must wait for a minimum for two months for their documents to be processed and if successful will be stamped with the student residence permit. Upon arrival in Norway, the student can now acquire a residence card. This card serves as the confirmation of their residence status and is issued by the local Police Station in Norway.
