Niger has several hospitals that serve different regions of the country and beyond borders. Some several specialists and volunteers assist to ensure that Nigeriens get the best care and medical assistance.  

Galmi Hospital- this is a hospital located in Galmi, 500kilometres away from Niamey in the Hausa Area. The outpatient department sees about 200 to 500 people daily. It serves traders, farmers, the nomadic Hausa, Fulani, and Tamasheq tribes. It also serves patients coming from other countries. 

Facilities: the hospital has 184 beds. Facilities offered include surgery, in-patient, and out-patient departments, anesthesiology, cardiology, radiology, colorectal surgery, antenatal and prenatal services. Let’s take a brief look at the services in detail.

  • Surgery- the hospital has 3 operating rooms with four tables. An average of 12 surgeries is performed daily averaging 9000 per year. The facility has several surgical and orthopedic machines, suction machines, and electrocautery machines.

  • Anesthesia- anesthesia cases are usually done under spinal anesthesia 

  • Radiology/ ultrasound- the facility has ultrasound machines, x-ray machines. There is no permanent radiologist so there is one available on call, temporarily.

  • Laboratory- the lab does malaria tests, HIV testing, urine and stool samples, and CD4 counts.

  • Pediatrics- the pediatric ward attends to more than 50 children each day at the pediatric clinic.

  • Dental- the hospital has a dental clinic that has autoclave equipment for tooth extraction and restoration, a chair, suction, and prosthesis equipment.

  • Common diseases- this department deals with common diseases including malaria, typhoid, obstetric complications, heart disease, Tuberculosis, burns, pneumonia, urological emergencies, malnutrition, and hypertension, to mention but a few.

Personnel: the facility has a staff complement of 200, including about 30 missionaries, doctors and nurses, specialists, and volunteers as well.

National Hospital of Niamey- this is a modern, government-administered hospital located in the capital city Niamey. It was founded in 1922. It is the biggest hospital in Niger.

The hospital provides a range of surgical and medical services in the country. It also acts as a referral hospital for other regional hospitals for extreme cases. 

Facilities: the hospital has radiology equipment, provides psychiatry, cardiology, ophthalmology, dermatology, otolaryngology, gynecology, and neurosurgery services. It has 244 beds and an emergency department.

Personnel: as of 2018 the hospital had fully qualified doctors and nurses, otolaryngologists, two ophthalmologists, 5 radiologists, 3 cardiologists, 3 dermatologists, 4 obstetricians, and gynecologists, 5 dentists, and a psychiatrist.

Lamorde National Hospitals- it is a teaching hospital also called Lamorde University Hospital, affiliated with Abdou Mounmouni University. It is located in Niamey

Facilities: it has 72 beds and is a teaching hospital as well.

CURE Niger Hospital- this is the only hospital in Niger that offers special surgical care for children with physical disabilities. Such conditions include cleft lip, club foot, palates, burn contractures, and other deformities.

It opened its doors to patients in 2010 and serves children from within the country outside borders.

Specialties- the facility specializes in plastic surgery, reconstructive surgery, and orthopedics.

The hospital’s outpatients received around 3281 patients as of 2019 and about 649 procedures were performed.
