Travelers from European Union countries usually do not require a visa for stays up to 3 months from the time of arrival. Foreigners can get a visa at the nearest French embassy or consulate. No visa will be issued on arrival and applicants must do so in advance. On arrival, travelers from non-EU countries need to apply for a residence permit for a stay of more than 3 months.

To apply for a new Caledonian Visa the following are a prerequisite.
- Must have a passport that is valid for at least 3 months beyond the duration of stay.
- Passport photocopies
- Letter of invitation
- Proof of travel purpose e.g. letter from the enrolling university.
- must also have a plane ticket and travel itinerary
- Students also have to show proof of sufficient funds to cover their trip.
- Proof of approved accommodation booking
- Recent passport size photographs.
- Proof of mandatory vaccination.
