Primary education In Mozambique is free and compulsory. It is subdivided into two levels, namely, the lower primary which consists of five years of schooling (Grades 1 to 5), and the upper primary which comprises two years (Grades 6 and 7) in most schools. The official age of entry into primary school is 6 years.

The government, however, in 2018, reviewed its National Education System Law and increased mandatory and free education from seven to nine years. The duration of primary education was also restructured and reduced to six years, from seven. There are more than 8000 primary schools in Mozambique.

Primary education consists of a lower primary level (EP1), for ages 7 to 11, and a higher primary level (EP2), for ages 12 and 13, encompassing grades 6 and 7.
