Food

meal prices in Mongolia can vary, the average cost of food in Mongolia is MNT15,495 per day. Based on the spending habits of previous travelers, when dining out an average meal in Mongolia should cost around MNT6,198 per person. Breakfast prices are usually much little cheaper than lunch or dinner

Accommodation

Mongolia has accommodation options for over $ 10 and $ 300 per night. Travelers can choose from hotels, homestays, guest houses, apartments and studios. Apartment costs are 

as follows: 1 bedroom bedroomed apartment in City Centre costs about MNT 1,016,265.78, a 1 bedroomed Apartment Outside of Centre costs MNT 598,089.50         

Transport

Transport costs in Mongolia are generally cheap. Lets take a look at some of the transport option available and costs.

Rental Cars- there are several car hire options available in Mongolia including Avis, Drive Mongolia, and Sixt, to mention but a few.Travelers can get a rental car at an affordable price around $35 per day for a compact vehicle at Sixt

Bus, Minibus & Trolleybus

In Ulaanbaatar, trolleybuses and buses ply the main roads for T500 per trip. Cities such as Darkhan and Erdenet also have minibuses that shuttle from one end of town to the other.

Minivan & Jeep

Minivans, jeeps and SUVs are used for long and short-distance travel in the Mongolian countryside, and are mandatory when visiting more remote attractions.

They can be shared or Alternatively, they can be hired privately. 11-seater Furgon minivans are used for longer cross-country trips that see a lot of traffic. Jeeps are usually khaki-coloured or green, and are found in more remote areas. They are nicknamed jaran yös or jaris in short.

Taxis- Ulaanbaatar has an estimated 600 official taxis (UB taxi service) of 11 companies operating in the city. many people also do taxi service with their private cars. Mongolian taxi fares are not too expensive. In Ulaanbaatar, taxi fare is 1000 MNT (0.4 USD) per km and when you call the official taxi, the flat fee is 1500 MNT.

When taking a taxi to the airport from downtown, one-way fee is typically between 25000 MNT and 30000 MNT even though the airport is 18 km from the city center. All official taxis have meter.

Private taxis don’t have meters, but prices can be negotiated depending on the distance. Credit cards not accepted by taxi drivers. Cash is the preferred method in Mongolia. There are Four ways of taking a taxi in Ulaanbaatar city including:

  • Taking a taxi on the street- You can stand along the road on the street and hail a cab. You can get official taxis or private cars. Thisis the easiest and quickest way to take a taxi as there are no flat fees.
  • Calling a taxi operator- travelers can call the taxi companies and ask the taxi plate number and arrival time. This is the safest option and is reliable. They add the flat fee to the taxi fare of your travel distance.
  • Using taxi apps- Another easy way is using taxi apps to take a taxi. There is no Uber taxi app in Mongolia but there are UBCab and ABA taxi Mongolia taxi apps used in Mongolia. These taxi apps are widely used in Ulaanbaatar and have an English menu. They have their own registered and trusted drivers. Fare is the same as 1000 MNT per km. the apps can be downloaded on the App Store and Play Store.

Utility prices in Mongolia are as follows: Basic utilities (Water, heating, garbage and electricity) costs MNT 164,063.61 or a, 85m2 Apartment, a minute Prepaid Mobile Tariff for Local calls costs MNT 76.92, and Internet for 60 Mbps or More, Unlimited Data costs MNT 44,040.43
