Night Life In Mauritania

Find Programs
(Bachelor's, Master's & PhD)

Many people when they are travelling they tend to worry about where to spend to spend a night out with friends and relax after a long stressful week. Mauritania offers you with endless and glamorous nightlife that will leave you wanting to explore even more. The country is a dry country, but alcohol can still be found if you know where to look! Many of the French - and Spanish-owned clubs and outlets will have some whiskey or beer available, depending on their supply, and will run from $2-$3USD a drink.

A quick tip for anyone!

Alcohol is forbidden so most nightlife consists of taking coffee or smoking a shisha at an outdoor cafe. Two cultural centres, CIMAN and the Institut Francais Mauritanie, as well as cafe La Tissayade occasionally have live music. If you are checking in the US embassy, ask the Marines on duty (please be smart about it) if they are having a party. You will have a great time in a safe place. Same can be said at just about every embassy, as the traveler community is very close and will spend the weekends together here. If you are still pondering on whether this would be a great idea then consider the following tries!

Monotel - Run by a Spanish father and son, this local outles gets busy at around two in the morning and regularly plays hosts to Mauritanian DJs. This place offers a decent restaurant and bar by day, is a fairly reliable source for whiskey.

Naf's Cafe - Located behind Friso's will also have beer, whisky rum and vodka here. Naf in the American Embassy will also have drinks during the day and a really an appealing spot to enjoy a night out! If you are feeling bold, simply start asking around if anyone knows where to get drinks. Several people will sell it here and there, smuggled from surrounding countries such as Senegal, but don't expect anything top shelf. A small bottle should run you around 6,000-10,000 each.

Due to the Muslimic belief nigthlife is restrictive in Mauritania. The best way to make the best way to get about it is to stay tuned with informants in some circles but your best bet would rather be on  locals that have knowledge on the whereabouts of the cities. Besides alcoholic beverages Mauritanians enjoy having dinner parties that are characterized by fun and merriment especialluy on special days such as birthday celebrations and weddings. There is quite unlimited fun you will experience in Mauritania as a student regardless of your city location, every corner has something unique to offer!!
