Student Life in the Maldives

Find Programs
(Bachelor's, Master's & PhD)

Every student's experiences differ when studying abroad. Although the experience varies from one individual to the other, it is not anything short of exciting. Being in the Maldives allows you to learn from a culture that may be different from yours.

The process of cultural integration is what captivates a lot of foreign students who are in the Maldives. It is quite obvious that your purpose to be in the Maldives is mainly to attain an education, but there are many activities that one can be actively involved in outside the academic walls, and these can be extracurricular activities.

One of the most popular sports that students opt for includes football, which is known as a preferable sporting discipline.

Sports

On the other hand, students are quick to avail time towards Basketball, which is infamously known as the second sport that is loved by a significant number of youths. Basketball promotes the game across the nation instilling the true spirit of sportsmanship amongst the youth.

Through various clinics and affiliations with international bodies, the MBA has continuously marched forward in achieving its goals.

The starting of Inter Atoll Tournament and other development programs are simple proof of the growing interest of basketball in the remote islands despite the challenges of providing infrastructure and technical assistance across 860Km of the sea.

Skills Training

Skills training sessions aimed at introducing and improving key academic and life skills necessary for success in your course, career, and personal life are delivered throughout the academic year.

You are encouraged to make time and attend this training, as they are designed to help you directly with your academic work, as well as, help you achieve your life goals.

Accommodation

Being in a foreign country requires you to have a hygienic place to stay within the period of study. It is important for you to either opt for campus accommodation that is guaranteed a comfortable stay for you.

Other students are more outgoing and are willing to explore and, in that case, you can always try your luck in apartments located closer to your institution of study. Being closer to your institution saves you a lot of time traveling to the academic institution.

Virtual Classroom

Students rather attend the virtual classroom unlike being in the classroom daily. That is another way you would choose to conduct your studies in the Maldives. That can be a new way of learning, although it is the manner that tertiary institutions are conducting lessons, especially at a time when the world is grappling with the deadly coronavirus disease.

Tourism

One of the rarest treats for travelers heading to the world’s beaches is stumbling across a bioluminescent stretch of sea. There are only a handful of places around the world where bioluminescent phytoplankton light up the water year-round. In the Maldives, the phenomenon has a habit of showing up here and there throughout the archipelago.

However, there are a few places where you can see the ocean's aglow more reliably. That includes the Dusit Thani Maldives in the Baa Atoll. During certain times of the year, this resort's beach comes alive with light at night giving off a starry-sky look in the dark waves.

We were lucky enough to witness the spectacle during our visit, though other spots in the Maldives may offer similar experiences as well. It's an unforgettable experience, but be sure to check on the timing of this spectacle with the hotel if you're looking specifically to witness the lights.

Diving

Your cheap flight to the Maldives will bring you to one of the top diving destinations in the world. With so much sea life and clear water, there's nothing to leave to the imagination. Girifushi Thila, Nassimo Thila, Middle Point, and Okobe Thila are known diving and snorkeling hot spots.

Nightlife

After your long flight to the Maldives, relaxation awaits. All of the bars are situated in resorts, and no alcohol is served in Male.

Most residents of Maldives observe Muslim tradition, so most locals do not drink at all. During the month of Ramadan all drinking in public is forbidden outside of resorts. Tipping is discouraged, so hang on to your bills!

Shopping

Whether you're looking for watches, electronics, jewelry, cosmetics, or any other luxurious items of desire, you're sure to find what you need in Maldives shopping hubs.

The northern point of Chaandhanee Magu is a Mecca for consumers and is known for its imports from Singapore, as well as hosting the Singapore Bazaar.

Also, visit the nearby fish market for a new culinary experience. Regardless of where you shop, be sure to splurge on what you saved from booking your cheap flight to the Maldives.
