The University was established in 1949 by combining several smaller national institutions, namely, “Nagasaki Medical College (which includes College Hospital and College of Pharmaceutical Sciences), Nagasaki College of Economics, Nagasaki Normal School, Nagasaki Youth Normal School, and Nagasaki High School”.

The university is in the historic town of Nagasaki which is a multi-cultural city with a rich history and a perfect balance of foreign influence with domestic tradition.  

The medical college was established as a training institute in 185 and it is seen as one of the earliest medical institutions in Japan.

The College of Economics was established in 1944 and later incorporated with the other national institutions to form the Nagasaki University in 1949.

The university is regarded as the first in Japan to teach Western-style medicine. As a result of its high standard of education and academic achievement, it has been consistently ranked as one of the first-50 top universities in Japan.

The primary campus for Nagasaki University is in Bunkyo-Masi, north of the city center. The Faculty of Education, Environmental Studies and Fisheries are on the primary campus.

 

The Sakamoto Campus houses the School of Medicine, Dentistry and the university hospital, while the Faculty of Economics can be found in the Katamuchi campus to the southeast.

On Campus Accomodation at Nagasaki University

There are student dormitories across its campuses. There are the Nagasaki University international house-building complexes in Sakamoto and Nishimachi. Only international students are eligible to stay in the international house.

The cost of rent per month in this dormitory starts from €70.  There is also the Ampelos dormitory which is an urban dormitory with price starting from €170 monthly.

Each room in the international house and the Ampelos dormitories are equipped with standard facilities and daily living appliances. There are standby medical units in the dormitories in cases of emergency and the rooms are topped with the highest security.

Ampelos dormitory organizes events and art shows every month for students and they serve food breakfast and dinner for a fee charged monthly.  

Off Campus Accomodation at Nagasaki University

They are two options for staying off-campus in Nagasaki. While some students prefer to rent their own houses, some students can choose the home-stay option whereby they live in the same house with locals in Nagasaki.

Students mostly prefer the homestay option as this provides an opportunity for them to quickly learn the Japanese culture and adapt to life in Nagasaki.
