About Iran

Iran is an astounding and culturally rich country. Its past dates back to the Lower Paleolithic time and is considered to be one of the oldest civilizations in the world, which implies it is home to some of the most incredible archaeological sites on the planet.

On the other hand, a little known fact about Iran is that it is the 18th largest country in the world, and its size and geographic location bridge Asia and the Middle East. These attributes make Iran a fascinating and diverse place to visit and explore.

The country was known as Persia until 1935 and their long and colorful history of literature, mathematics, astronomy, and philosophy is well noted. Persia was an important center of arts and music, and the amazing history can still be seen even today.

Today, the country is officially known as the Islamic Republic of Iran, but since its political history has been tumultuous, the number of foreign travelers to the country is limited, adding to its mysticism as a whole.

Tehran, the capital, remains the country’s cultural, political and commercial hub and where most foreigners start their journey. Although there are plenty of amazing spots to explore here, the main archeological and historic marvels are far from Tehran.

Even though traveling within Iran can be both complicated and even dangerous, some worthwhile destinations to check out are Kermanshah, Persepolis, Susa, and Dizin. Rental cars are an option; albeit, hiring a travel agency to explore the area is the safest option as westerners are sometimes targeted in the countryside.

Most visitors will have to use an agency to book lodging in Iran. In the capital, visitors will find international level, five-star hotels, however, outside of the capital, be ready to adjust to guesthouse-type residences.

Foreigners should note that a man and woman cannot share a room unless they can prove they are indeed married. Although westerners are generally exempt from this rule, it makes sense to carry a copy of your marriage certificate to avoid chaos.

Imam Khomeini International Airport is the main gateway into the country. There are currently no direct flights from North America so connections have be made through Europe or the Middle East amongst other countries.

It is also possible to get to Tehran via train or car from Turkey which is also viable. However, non-airport routes are not advised for visitors who require a visa on arrival.

Political instability and international sanctions is a main issue here. Although most visitors will no doubt enjoy an uneventful and amazing vacation in the country, remain vigilant to the situation.

This means regularly checking travel alerts from the consulate and having emergency contacts on paper. Once you are here it is advised to try by all means to avoid places where large groups are congregating, demonstrations or political rallies.

About Iran's Economy

We know how students get concerned about the quality of life in a foreign country! No one would just travel with an appreciation of the economy of the country of destination which is why we have dedicated this section to inform you about the economy of Iran.

The information here will but only enhance your decision-making process for studying abroad here. We hope after you are done reading through you will save time to apply with RocApply to the university of your choice!

The most formidable challenge facing Iran’s economy remains its continuing isolation from the international community. The isolation has hampered the short and long-term growth of its trade, restricted the country’s access to high technology, and impeded foreign investment.

The country’s isolation is a product both of the xenophobia of its more conservative politicians who fear postimperial entanglements and sanctions placed by the international community, particularly the United States, which accuses Iran of supporting international terrorism.

The political and administrative system of the country has not made those changes in trade, investment, and related economic policies that would expedite economic development and attract foreign capital.

The government’s development programs and strategies, which are funded by foreign aid, also have failed to respond directly to the needs of rural people. The country’s main economic boost is in oil production.

The country’s economy is marked by statist policies, inefficiencies, and reliance on oil and gas exports, but Iran also has significant agricultural, industrial, and service sectors.

The Iranian government directly commands owns and operates hundreds of state-owned enterprises and indirectly possesses many companies affiliated with the country’s security forces.

Distortions, including corruption, price controls, subsidies, and a banking system holding billions of dollars of under-performing loans; weigh down the economy, undermining the potential for private-sector-led growth.

The authorities have adopted a comprehensive strategy encompassing market-based reforms as reflected in the government’s 20-year vision document and the sixth five-year development plan for the 2016-2021 period.

The sixth five-year development strategy is comprised of three pillars, namely, the development of a strong economy, progress in science and technology, and the promotion of cultural perfection.

On the economic front, the development plan envisages an annual economic growth rate of eight percent and reforms of state-owned enterprises, the financial and banking sector, and the allocation and management of oil revenues among the main priorities.
