Secondary education in Guinea-Bissau is made up of two cycles, a 3-year general-secondary cycle known as junior high school or lower secondary for grades 7 to 9 and high school education for grades 10 to 12. The junior secondary is part of basic education and lasts for 3 years. The senior high school acts as a preparatory curse for tertiary or university education, on successful completion of high school, students will be able to enroll into universities of their choice depending on their subject orientations.

Excelling Students at the basic education level will be eligible to proceed to secondary education, where they will learn for 3 years from grades 10 to 12. There is also a vocational or technical education stream where students can be enrolled upon completion of grade 6.

Students who have attained a basic education certificate can enroll in secondary education for 3 years in preparation for a High School diploma program.
