Shopping in Guadeloupe

(Bachelor's, Master's & PhD)

Studying abroad comes in handy with a good shopping culture! Everyone wants to get time to explore markets and pick a few goodies to add to the cart list! Shopaholics welcome to Guadeloupe, the land of beauty and charming crafts!

This is where your shopping impulse is put to the test. With numerous shopping malls, stalls, shops, and supermarkets Guadeloupe will certainly take thy breath away!

As a French territory, the country offers some of the finest imports from the mainland along with locally made goods. All luxury products are imported from France, including designer goods, perfumes, cheese, fine china, and liquor.

If you are searching for something to take home with you, go straight to the markets to find hand-woven mats, locally sourced spices, coffee and distilled rum. Dolls wearing madras and fisherman hats crafted from split bamboo make interesting souvenirs and support the economy.

Point-A-Pitre, the economic hub, is the best shopping destination because it is home to many open-air markets where women sell their crafts, spices and home-sorted foods.

Head to Place de la Victoire or the major square to find the central market, or wander around Rue Schoelcher, Nozieres and Frebault to find French boutiques. If you happen to be here on the first Sunday of the month, try visiting Darse for its flea market.

You can also go to Saint-Claude, Sainte-Anne and Moule, where flea markets are held on swapping Sundays. Other worthwhile purchases in Guadeloupe include voodoo dolls and hand-woven lace.

Local artisans sell their works at galleries throughout the island, but if you want to visit a mall, Carrefour is the place to go, which is just by Le Raizet International Airport.

Most shops in Guadeloupe are open from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 a.m., and then from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday to Saturday. Many stores are closed on holidays and Sundays. When shopping in the local markets, feel free to bargain.

If you want to get an idea of how much you should be paying, visit the state-run craft markets, which have steady prices. Shops here are mostly open all day. Most are closed at least once a week, usually on Sundays, but you will still find something open every day of the week.

"I enjoy shopping and I found it affordable but some of the clothes are definitely not of the highest quality." - Hassan from Turkey
