About Grenada

Defining the southern tip of a string of Caribbean islands, Grenada is known as the “Spice Isle” and a major source of cinnamon, cocoa, ginger, and the world’s largest exporter of nutmeg.

It encompasses three main islands: Grenada (being the largest), Carriacou and Petite Martinique, and smallest of the Grenadines. With tempting blue seas and a fascinating tropical climate, Grenada’s laid-back lifestyle and unique nature make it a popular vacation destination.

If water sports are in your list of priorities, you will not be disappointed by the crystal clear seas and classic, pristine sandy shores of Grenada. The country is well-known for its diving and snorkeling, and contains many famous dive spots including reefs and wrecks.

Trips can be easily arranged, and transfers off the island of Carriacou are provided. Chartering a yacht to tour the smaller islands of the Grenadines for a few days is another great option.

Ecotourism is popular here, and the chance to watch six-hundred leatherback turtles migrate to Levera Beach to lay their eggs is not to be missed April through July.

To preserve conservation of the area, travelers are only allowed through a licensed tour operator, but all providers guaranteed an up-close encounter.

All inclusive eco-lodges nestled among the secluded yet easily-accessible bays provide a peaceful stay on the islands, within easy reach of natural attractions.

Closer to the main strip of restaurants and nightlife, you will find a plethora of quality accommodations for all budgets near the popular beaches.

The main gateway to Grenada is Maurice Bishop International Airport, located in the capital, St George’s. Many of the airlines that fly there serve Miami and New York.

From here, there is a limited connection to Carriacou Island, or for a more leisurely journey, a scheduled ferry service links the three main islands. RocApply rental cars are readily available for getting around; otherwise, taxis and water taxis are other popular transportation options.

About Grenada's Economy

The country’s economy has shifted significantly since the 1970s, from one almost entirely based on producing agricultural products for export to a much more modernized and diversified one.

For man but fluctuating world prices, natural disasters, and the threatened removal of preferential trading pacts have forced Grenada's government to seek to broaden the island's economic base.

Successive governments since the 1980s have been acutely aware that small-island states such as.

The Grenada are extremely vulnerable to economic factors beyond their control and have hence tried to deduct over-reliance on agricultural exports.

Grenada now has a small but flourishing manufacturing sector, a nascent financial services sector, and an important tourism sector, which is the island's main foreign exchange earner.

The World Bank Board of Executive Directors approved today a USD 20 million credit to support Grenada’s transition to a resilient blue economy.

The Second Fiscal Resilience and Blue Growth Development Policy Credit supports reforms to support fiscal sustainability, strengthen marine and coastal management, and build climate resilience.

This operation, the second in a programmatic series of two IDA credits, deepens support for the country’s policy and institutional measures to maintain fiscal discipline and widen the economy towards a blue growth model that is based on sustainable and well-governed use of ocean resources.

It includes fiscal reform plans such as building fiscal buffers, improving public expenditure management, instituting customs and excise reforms, and improving transparency of public enterprises.

The operation also supports the Government’s measures for better environment and natural resource management, including consolidated coastal zone management and inclusion of environmental sustainability requirements in resource procurement.

A major policy measure is the ban of Styrofoam food containers, and the phase out of single-use plastic shopping bags and disposables. Plastic pollution represents one of the Caribbean’s main environmental challenges that is polluting watersheds, coastal areas, the ocean, and poses a threat to ocean biodiversity and tourism development.

The US$20 million operation is financed by the International Development Association, the concessional financing section of the World Bank. The credit has a maturity forty years, and a grace period of 10 years.

The country is on the brink of making an iconic economic turn-around thus attracting quite a handful of international students. The “Blue Economic” country is outstandingly attractive to students locally and abroad likewise!
