Greece has one of the lowest living costs in Europe and it is warm most times in a year. Athens is the capital and the largest city in the country. It is also where the majority of Greek citizens reside.

In Greece, as with any other country, the cost of living usually entails food, rent and utilities, public transportation, jobs and salaries, and even leisure activities.

Food

Greek food is very authentic and Greek cuisine is one of the best intercontinental cuisines. Greek food also shares many similarities with other Mediterranean cultures but the Greeks lay a strong claim to the origin of these foods.

Different lifestyles are very well represented in Greek foods, we find that both meat lovers and vegetarians/vegans all have many options to choose from.

Eating out is relatively cheaper in Greece than in other European countries like France or Italy. A typical breakfast meal will cost about €5 to €7 and dinner will cost about €9 to €15 in a not so expensive restaurant.

Popular fast-food chains are also well spread across Greece and sell meals at basic prices between €5 to €8. Soft drinks and coffee also basically cost around €2 to €3. Alcoholic beverages such as beer or wine typically cost about €3 to €7

Housing Costs

A one-bedroom apartment in the city center of large cities like Athens or Thessaloniki will start from €250. Prices go up to €500 depending on how fancy the flats are or the amenities offered.

Renting a one-bedroom flat in smaller cities or areas outside the city center of larger cities will be a little bit cheaper. Prices for these flats start from €200 to €400 per month. Students are advised to consider factors like their university’s proximity and transportation when seeking for accommodation outside their campus.

Utility costs range from €90 to €200 for services such as heating, water, and electricity, etc. The best possible internet service in Greece costs about €50. Similar to countries like Portugal, television is free to view in Greece. However, there is a small license fee that will be automatically added to the electricity bill.

Public Transportation

The public transportation system in Greece offers a variety of different routes combining different means of public transport like buses, trams, trolley-buses, metro, and railway. One great thing about Greece is that, with a €1.40 ticket, you can move around the city using different public transport within 90 minutes.

Everything is connected, easy and simple to use. There are taxis available everywhere in the country, also, e-transport apps like Uber are very predominant as well.

Leisure Activities

A typical gym for athletic individuals costs about €25 for a gym membership but individuals who are very frugal can pay as low as €8 per month. Moviegoers will find that a movie ticket costs about €8 per person.

Most foreigners in Greece spend on exploring the beauty of the country. The many amazing architectures, nature, ancient ruins and historic sites littered around the country.
