Preparatory school in Egypt

Students must pass the final primary school examination to be awarded the primary certificate school leaving certificate and progress into preparatory school. The preparatory school is for three years and encompasses grades 7 to 9. This may, in some instances be referred to as junior secondary.

The preparatory curriculum offers a variety of subjects including Arabic, agriculture, art, English, mathematics, music, religious studies, and social studies, to mention but a few. Those who excel and succeed in the final examinations at the end of grade nine, students receive the Basic Education Certificate (those at secular schools), and those at Al-Azhar-affiliated schools receive the Al-Azhar Basic Education Certificate.

The curriculum for Al-Azhar schools is generally the same as in secular public schools, but places a greater emphasis on Islamic studies. the final preparatory education examination (Adaadiya Amma) is an examination that will determine whether students progress into the general secondary education track or the vocational track.

Secondary education in Egypt consists of three tracks, namely general, vocational/technical, and Islamic schools. The general secondary stage includes 3 years of education, whereas the secondary vocational track may last for 3 to 5 years.

Let us look briefly at the 2 secondary streams in Egypt (General Secondary Education, and Vocational Secondary Education).

The general (academic) track- Students in the academic track spend three years preparing to enter university. They are tested every month for the first two years, and must also pass a final examinational to earn the Basic Education Completion Certificate that will allow them to progress into university or tertiary education.

The vocational track- in this track, Students study more trade-oriented skills that will assist them in the future.

Regardless of which track students take, they have access to teacher-sponsored extracurricular activities. Athletically, soccer (football) is a popular choice, but there are additional cultural and academic options as well, depending on the school.

Al-Azhar system - Students enrolled in Islamic schools study the same curriculum as their secondary counterparts, with the addition of Islamic studies and in-depth study of the Quran. There are separate Islamic schools for boys and girls, and all students who complete Islamic secondary school are automatically eligible to attend Al-Azhar University in Cairo. Islamic schools account for less than a tenth of all Egyptian students.

The Programme includes opportunities to take part in sporting, creative and service-based co-curricular activities and the in-school Work Experience Programme. Students here study 3 to 4 subjects.

International Baccalaureate- the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is for students aged 16 to 19 that aims to challenge students to gain deep knowledge while developing them into independent thinkers with a global outlook. It is a combination of 6 subjects, with 3 being studied at Higher Level and 3 at Standard Level. The program focuses on inquiry-based learning, critical thinking, action, and reflection that is designed to empower students to take responsibility for their learning. The Core consists of an Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and Creativity, Activity and Service which provides students with a wide range of opportunities and prepares them to become successful global citizens.
