Congo Brazzaville reflects a rich, and diverse culture with a few French influences. Several Ethnic groups follow different customs but are always united for purpose of a country. There are several activities, and practices that make Congo Brazzaville a unique cultural destination.

Religion

Congo Brazzaville is a religiously diverse country with the population practicing or following different religious beliefs. There were 88.5% Christians in Congo Brazzaville, with 52.9% being Catholic, 27.3% protestant, and 8.3% other Christian groups, 4.7% followed traditional beliefs, with 3% non-religious, 2.3% Muslims, and 1.5% undeclared.

Food and cuisine

Food in Congo Brazzaville is based on ingredients including rice, chicken, cereals, cassava, corn, beef, vegetables, peanuts, and fish. Rice, Fufu, cassava, plantains, and potatoes are general staple foods eaten with side dishes and sauces in Congo Brazzaville. These are some of the dishes eaten in Congo Brazzaville:

Moamba- is a dish prepared with sauces usually made from peanut butter.

Chikwangue- is made from cassava which has been cooked and wrapped in banana leaves.

Fufu- is a dish made from cassava flour. It is a staple dish in Congo Brazzaville which is served with some sauces.

Sombe- is made from boiled, pounded, and cooked cassava leaves. Liboke ya mbika- is made from steamed pumpkin seed pudding.

Kamundele- is beef barbecued on skewers.

Pondu ya Madesu- refers to cassava leaves with beans.

Mikate- are deep-fried dough balls.

Ndakala- refers to dried small fish.

Music

The most popular music in Congo Brazzaville’s soukous. It is the home-grown music of the Congo region. Rhumba music is also very popular in the Congo. Popular music instruments in traditional music include the xylophone and mvet, a kind of harp made of a long tube with gourds. Other forms of music include jazz and hip hop. One popular group is the Bisso Na Bisso, which comes from Congo Brazzaville.

Sport

The most popular sport in the republic is soccer. Its main governing body is the Congolese Football Federation which was founded in 1962 and is also officially recognized by Fifa. The national soccer team is known as the Red Devils and has won the African games in 1965, and the African Cup of Nations in 1975. Other popular sports include Tennis, athletics, basketball, handball, and basketball, to mention but a few. Most notable names include Jo Wilfred Tsonga, one of the world’s best tennis players, and Serge Ibaka who plays in the NBA.
