Brunei is an independent Islamic sultanate in Southeast Asia. It is bordered to the north by the South China Sea and on all the other sides by the East Malaysian state of Sarawak, which also divides the state into two disconnected segments of unequal size.

The Government of Brunei believes that by investing in a reliable education system, a country supplies citizens with the knowledge and resources to lead a healthy and successful life.

Brunei has over the years focused on the implementation of this philosophy into the structure of its education system. Education in Brunei is provided and regulated by the Government of Brunei through the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

The Ministry of Education manages most of the government and private schools in the country where as the Ministry of Religious Affairs specifically administers government schools which provide Islamic religious education.

Compulsory education is fully subsidized by the government for the citizens of Brunei and it usually extends to post-secondary and sometimes university education. Formal education in Brunei comprises of compulsory, post-secondary and higher education.

General education can be attained in government schools or private schools and religious education is attained in government religious schools

Post-secondary education consists of the sixth form which is an extension of secondary and allows direct entrance to higher education and technical and vocational education which are provided in both government institutions and private colleges.

Higher education from bachelor's degree is provided in four government universities. English is the main medium of instruction in most primary and secondary schools as well as colleges and universities.

Brunei has an adult literacy rate of 97.21%. While the male literacy rate is 98.05%, and 96.3% for females, according publishes UNESCO.

About Brunei

Brunei is a country that is located on the north coast of the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. Its coastline is on the South China Sea, the country is completely surrounded by the Malaysian state of Sarawak.

It is the only sovereign state on the island of Borneo while the rest of the island is divided between Malaysia and Indonesia. It has a total Area of 5 765 km2.

Ethnic groups

The official language in Brunei is Malay, and English is a major second language. Many Chinese speak southern varieties of Chinese, and many learn Mandarin at school. Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque- is a Mosque in Bandar Seri Begawan. An artificial lagoon and pool that surrounds the mosque which overlooks the Brunei River and Kampong Ayer. This is one of the most beautiful picturesque attractions in Brunei.

It is considered as one of the most beautiful mosques in the Asia Pacific. The mosque has marble minarets and golden domes, a courtyard and is surrounded by a large number of trees and floral gardens.

It is a major historical site, and a famous tourist attraction of Brunei. It was named after Omar Ali Saifuddien III who was the 28th Sultan of Brunei and who initiated its construction.

Malay Technology Museum- this is a museum located in Kota Batu, Bandar Seri Begawan. It is located next to the Brunei Museum. The building was donated by the Royal Dutch or Shell Group of companies in conjunction with the Sultanate's independence in 1984.

Tasek Lama Recreational Park- this is a park Located at Bandar Seri Begawan. Tasek Lama Recreational Park provides is an ideal setting to relax and unwind. It is a peaceful urban oasis containing a natural waterfall and a lake.

The park I quite popular with joggers and hikers because of its extensive trails. Travelers and visitors can enjoy the views from the hill and soak in the beauty of the natural waterfall. The Park offers trails into the jungle leading to waterfalls, plus picnic spots and a lookout tower.

Other facilities include children’s playgrounds, exercise equipment, and a climbing wall. The park also has a wide array of flora and fauna such as cheeky macaque monkeys and interesting flower species.

Ulu Temburong National Park- it is Brunei’s first national park which was opened in 1991 in Temburong District. The park is one of the top ecotourism attractions in Brunei. Unlike their Bornean neighbours, the Sultanate’s rainforests remain intact in a type of state-sponsored conservation.

Visitors can enjoy hiking on jungle trails, canopy walks and see some of the island’s wildlife.

About Brunei's Economy

The economy of Brunei is a mixed economy with foreign and domestic entrepreneurship plus government regulation. The Brunei Dollar (BND or B$) is the main currency of Brunei.

The Bruneian economy largely depends on exports of crude oil and natural gas which account for over half of GDP revenue. GDP Per capita in Brunei is high and income from overseas investment supplements income from domestic production.

The government also provides all medical services and subsidizes food and housing. The government has over the years shown progress in its policy diversifying the economy away from oil and gas.

Brunei is the third-largest producer of oil in Southeast Asia with an average of about 180 000 barrels per day. It is also the ninth-largest producer of liquefied natural gas in the world.

Nominal GDP as of 2020 was estimated at $10.647 with a per capita of $23 117 while GDP (PPP) was estimated at $28.470 billion with a per capita of $61 816 as of 2020. Inflation rate was 0.149% as of 2018. GDP growth was estimated at 1.3% in 2017, and grew by 0.1% in 2018, 1.8% in 2019, and by 4.7% as of 2020. GDP contribution by sector was as follows:

The total employment rate was estimated at 56.9% as of 2017 and Labor force by occupation showed agriculture with 4.2%, industry with 62.8%, and services with 33%. Unemployment was estimated at 9.3%. Brunei is ranked 66th on the ease of doing business index in 2020.

Main industries in Brunei include petroleum, petroleum refining, liquefied natural gas, construction, agriculture, aquaculture, and transportation.

Trade

As of 2017, Exports in Brunei were estimated at $5.885 billion. Major exports included mineral fuels, organic chemicals, Industrial Machinery, Aircraft, Iron & Steel Articles, Precision Instruments, Electrical Machinery, Chemical Products, Iron & Steel, and Aluminum. main export partners included Japan with 27.8%, South Korea 12.4%, Thailand 11.5%, Malaysia 11.3%, India 9.3%, Singapore 7.7%, Switzerland 5%, and China with 4.7%, to mention but a few.
