About Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina is located in the Balkans region of southern Europe to the north of Montenegro, the south of Serbia, and the west of Croatia. Bosnia is generally located in the northern area while Herzegovina is located in the southern area and culturally the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina are ethnically the same with only that more Croats live in Herzegovina since the region is closer to the Croatian border. The largest city which happens to be the capital is Sarajevo which is situated in the east of the country.

Bosnia has a land area of approximately 51,129 km sq and is arguably a landlocked region within Europe. The country has had a very unique history raided by different civilizations that constitute a major part of their current clime.

The country is divided into two national entities that share equal land space which serves the three different people groups known as the constituent peoples, a unique term that only applies to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The country is mostly mountainous or hilly as it lies in the Dinaric Alps with flatter lands in the northeast by the Pannonian Basin. About half of the country is forested and about 30% of the is arable mostly in the northeast regions. Whereas the south, mostly in Herzegovina is more rocky and dry as the rest of the country.

The country has about 4 million people in the population of which 48% of the people are Bosnia and about 33% are Serbs, 15% Croats, and the remaining 4% from other nations. The 3 main people groups of this country are pretty much what makes the country continue to function even in its inherent diversity.

Bosnians, Croatians, Serbians, Montenegrans can all understand each other's languages as they speak a variation of a Slavic based dialect with a few differential nuances. The only difference is in its written form, Serbian is written with a Cyrillic alphabet while Croatian and Bosnian are written with a Latin-based alphabet.

Bosnian and Herzegovina have a bi-Carmel legislature that includes a three-member presidency, one for each of the people groups (Serbs, Croats, and Bosnians). However, the state government is highly decentralized and a lot of the legislation just goes to the respective entities.

Culturally, the country sticks out, as a former member of the Ottoman Empire, Islam spread to the nation and today is part of the religious majority.

Muslims make up about 45% of the population, most of whom are non-denominational Muslims, also about 36% are Serb Orthodox Christians, with a 15% Catholic population of Croats.

There is a cultural mix of European and Middle Eastern heritage which is displayed beautifully in their food, lifestyle, and traditions. Bosnia is a member of the United Nations, CEFTA, Council of Europe, and is a candidate for EU membership.
