The cost of living in Bosnia and Herzegovina ranks 316th in the world for being a very affordable country to live, study, or work. Taking the basic aspects of life in the country, and in collaboration with our university partners and various sources, we have assembled the average costs of living (2020 figures) in Bosnia and Herzegovina for international students.

The currency of exchange is the Bosnian Convertible Mark (BAM), and you can easily convert these figures based on the current exchange values to have an idea of how much you will be spending while studying in the country. Although they have their currency, the European Euro (€) is still widely accepted and used as a benchmark for comparison along with the US Dollar ($).

Rent

The price of rent varies between regions and the location of the accommodation unit within the city also plays a factor in how expensive they might cost.

Rent prices per month for units within the city center costs around 350 BAM and rental prices for houses outside of the center go around 200 BAM to 250 BAM per month.

Utilities

The total costs for amenities such as electricity, water, heating, telephone, internet, and cable tv all cost around 250 BAM to 300 BAM monthly depending on its usage.

Basic Foods

Food items like milk, bread, 1kg of cheese, 1kg of rice, one dozen eggs costs around 17 BAM from the local grocery store, and around 12 BAM at the farmer’s market. Also, fruits such as 1 kg apple, 1kg banana, 1kg orange go for 5.50 BAM.

Other vegetable food items like 1kg tomatoes, 1kg potatoes, 1kg onions all costs 3 BAM at any grocery store or market. 1 kg of meat costs 7 BAM and 1 kg of beef costs 14 BAM.

Transportation

As a student, you benefit from an effective and timely transportation system anywhere within the country. There are buses, metros, trains, taxis, and trams that are very functional all through the day.

Getting around in any of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s big cities is one of the easiest parts of living, as traffic is less and public transportation is favored by all the citizens regardless of their social class.

A one-way bus ticket costs 1.80 BAM and for a discounted price of 35 BAM to 50 BAM, you can get a monthly pass for trips to anywhere within the city.

In the event that you can afford to purchase your own car, we suggest the 1.4 -120 HP/ VW Golf which costs about 33,000 BAM. Powering your vehicle would require gasoline which costs around 2.25 BAM for one liter.

Restaurants

Students who wish to eat out can do so at the many fast foods and local restaurants in the country for 7 BAM per meal or if they are fancier can opt for dinner at a classic restaurant for 7 BAM to 14 BAM per meal for one person.

Bosnia and Herzegovina have very strong coffee consumption and the price of coffee at any cafe is 1.80 BAM. Any cold beverages can cost somewhere between 1.20 to 2.50 BAM anywhere in the country.
