When you apply to study in Belgium you should know that generally, undergraduate education here takes four years at universities, but some fields such as medicine take longer even up to five years.

The medium of instruction at some state universities is English, German or French. Therefore, all correspondence with the university staff and applications to the faculties can be done in English, German or French. However, instruction language at state universities here is mostly French.

When entering the exam of the university, the knowledge of other languages such as German is not necessary. Those who pass the exams, and have only a little knowledge of French and/or German, are considered to take one year of language foundation to gain proficiency in the languages.

The Belgian higher education system is divided into colleges and universities of applied sciences. As usual in the European Union, the degree-structure is three-tiered, bachelor, master and doctoral degrees.

There are currently eighty-one Belgian higher education institutions, of which thirty are private. In 2018, approximately half a million students were enrolled at Belgian universities. In general, the study programs are structured by academic years.
