Shopping in Australia

Being in a new environment comes with so many exciting possibilities, it provides the chance to see new things and gain new insights. Shopping for several necessities such as food, clothing, household items, and other grocery items is a very integral part of life in Australia.

Because Australia has a different timezone and climate essentially, there are many new things to learn and familiarize with as an international student. RocApply has all the knowledge you require to better understand your new environment. As such, we have compiled a list of where to shop for all the necessary items as a foreign student in Australia.

For food, we have established that cooking at home is way cheaper and is a great way to save some money as eating out can be quite a costly affair especially if it happens regularly. Grocery shopping can cost anything from $120 to $180 AUD per month depending on individual diet or lifestyle preferences. Major supermarket chains that are not only widespread in the country but have very favorable prices include;

  • Woolworths
  • IGA
  • Coles
  • Aldi

For clothes, regardless of your style choices and fashion staples, there are different shops and boutiques to shop from across Australia. One popular phenomenon in the country for students is shopping at recycled clothes superstores.

Lovers of vintage and quality secondhand clothing can find all they need in stores like ‘Savers’ and there are usually three to four of these stores around different major cities.

Books are also sold here at very cheap prices, these books are still in very optimal conditions and students can save a ton from shopping here. You can also find furniture, electrical and sporting goods.

Daiso is another very huge but affordable place to shop where most items are sold at $2 to $3 AUD. It is a really good place for beauty products, toiletries, cleaning products, and home decorative items. It is also a very great place to shop for stationery and storage solutions as many students have taken to the very fancy elements of their products.

Locals in Australia love to shop at the very ubiquitous Kmart for everyday household goods. The supermarket is a general favorite for every type of homeware. It also helps that prices on the items sold here are very cheap even more so for student shoppers with a loyalty card. Clothes and many other grocery items are sold here at a very good value.
