Find Programs
(Bachelor's, Master's & PhD)

Once you have been accepted into any university in Australia have commenced the visa process, RocApply advises our students to commence with the necessary plans for their accommodation.

We have vital information on several housing options available for international students. With student housing, two of the biggest concerns our students have is with their budget and how convenient their housing options are.

As with many other countries, accommodation types and prices varies from state to state. Larger cities like Melbourne and Sydney are more expensive to live in than cities like Perth and Adelaide.

Another factor to consider is the distance or proximity to your university campus, as the closer, you are to school the more convenient it is to move around. Likewise, farther locations would mean that the student must find effective means of transporting themselves to school.

One of the best housing options for students in Australia is the shared apartment option which means a house or accommodation is shared by a number of people. This option is best for students because it removes the burden of paying bills and the occupants are most likely to receive amenities like internet, heating, laundry, reading space, bed, microwave, etc.

Weekly rent under shared accommodation can be between A$150 up to A$ 500 depending on the location and the building conditions. Security deposits are requested from each individual occupant but are essentially refunded once they vacate the property.

RocApply Tip: Please consider living with people from a different culture as you are, that way you expand your network and learn new things.

Another option is accommodation in a rental property, which is renting a private apartment for yourself or still sharing with friends to make it cheaper. Under this option, there is a need to pay a security deposit and one or two months advance rent.

The security deposit will be refunded in full when the occupants vacate the premises. Occupants typically sign a contract with the landlord that serves as an agreement between the two. Most apartments come fully furnished with a bed, mattress, wardrobe, study space and furniture.

RocApply Tip: - Please read the contract and ensure that the names of all the occupants are written on it. Also as a student, a furnished rental apartment is what you need so as to avoid spending money on furniture.

The price of rent for two or three-bedroom properties can be anywhere between A$ 250 to A$ 500 per week depending on the location and utilities provided.

Lastly, campus accommodation is another housing option for foreign students. Several universities in Australia have dormitories and halls of residence solely for students.

Although university housing is more expensive but highly sought after for those who prefer to live on campus or in close proximity to their academic environment.
