About Lilongwe

Lilongwe is named after the Lilongwe River that flows through the city and became the official capital of Malawi inland in 1975. In 2012, Lilongwe had 781,000 residents, making it the largest city in the country.

Lilongwe is located in the center of this long and narrow country, which is easier for citizens of Lilongwe to enter than the previous capital in the south of the country. Lilongwe is also close to the countries of Mozambique and Zambia.

Since becoming the capital of Malawi, Lilongwe has developed rapidly, partly because the city is home to many Europeans and South Africans. There are many NGOs in Southern Africa.

The city is also home to British and American foreign aid personnel, diplomats from dozens of countries, and international companies. Although Lilongwe is the political center of the country, Blantyre in the south of the country is still the economic and commercial center of Malawi.

The capital of Lilongwe (founded in 1975) in Malawi. Lilongwe, named after the nearby river, is located on the inland plains and is one of the largest cities in the country. In 1904, it became the headquarters of the colonial zone.

The emergence of the large-scale tobacco industry in the surrounding area in the 1920s, and its location at the junction of several major roads, made Lilongwe increasingly important as a fertile Central Plateau agricultural market center. ... In 1965, Hastings, the first president of Malawi, elected Kamuzu Banda (Kamuzu Banda) as an economic growth point in northern and central Malawi.

The development of Lilongwe as the new capital of the country began in 1968.

Lilongwe, the quiet capital of Malawi, is divided into old and new cities. The old town has lively shops, markets, cafes, hotels, and restaurants. The new city is home to embassies, international aid organizations, and corporate headquarters.

A large number of immigrants makes Lilongwe a very western city, an ideal stopover for tired travelers to relax and shop to the country’s wildlife sanctuary or the beaches of Lake Malawi.

The official languages of Lilongwe and Malawi are English and Chichewa. There are two main religions in the country: Christianity (most Christians are Catholics or Presbyterians) and Islam. Most Muslims are Sunni.
