About Belarus

Once part of Soviet Russia, Belarus – (Belorussia -White Russia), as it was previously known, remains outside of European politics and capitalism, leaving it void of advertising and Western influence, one of the country’s main appeals. The sprawling landscapes here are home to mystical forests, placid lakes, and picture-perfect villages, in addition to lively cities, formidable castles, and ancient monasteries.

The capital, Minsk, is slowly emerging as a cosmopolitan city, and what Belarus lacks in tourist infrastructure, it makes up for in chic cafes and fascinating parks. Outside the capital which was completely flattened in World War II, foreigners are drawn to the impressive national parks and wetlands where wildlife is vast.

Due to its strategic position on the map, the country has a war torn past, being trampled by many armies throughout its history. However, Belarus is now a relatively peaceful place offering tourists the chance to explore its bucolic areas and embark upon an array of things to do which can be organized through local tour operators.

The official languages of the country are Belarusian and Russian, and the country does not have an official religion. When you study in here you’re guaranteed an excellent opportunity to tour one of the world's most sort after countries. You will explore Belarus's unique mix of culture. Although the political situation in Belarus remains bleak albeit, the people are extremely friendly and hospitable, and the rich heritage of the area is evident in the culture and cuisine.

Local dishes include the local borshch, a beetroot soup topped with sour cream, and dracheny, a potato-based meal served with pickled berries. In recent years, Minsk’s cultural influence has grown, and the city is now home to opera, ballet, theater, and a blasting nightlife.

Accommodation options are widespread, with two-, three-, and four-star establishments situated in the main cities, in addition to a number of campsites throughout the country. There are vast opportunities to indulge in adventure and outdoor activities, including organized hunting trips, skiing in the peaks near Minsk, and hiking through the wonderful forests.

The most common options for getting around Belarus and exploring the scenic landscapes are by train and bus. Traveling by bus is the most convenient and inexpensive however, trains tend to be much more comfortable and provide stunning views of the deeply forested countryside along the way.

About Belarus Economy

President Alexander Lukashenko, in power since 1994, controls all branches of government in Belarus, which has one of Europe’s worst human rights records. After Lukashenko won reelection again in the 2020 presidential election, which international observers viewed as ‘ccoked’, protestors called for him to leave office in favor of the main opposition candidate, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya.

Industries and state-controlled agriculture are not competitive in the region. New non-Russian foreign investment has virtually disappeared in recent years, largely because of the country’s unfavorable investment environment. The country is dependent on Russia for its energy supplies and joined the Russia-backed Eurasian Economic Union in 2015. Belarus’s economic freedom score is 61.0, making its economy the 95th freest in the 2021 Index.

Its overall score has decreased by 0.7 point, primarily because of a decline in judicial impact. Belarus is ranked 43rd among 45 countries in the Europe region, and its overall score is below international averages. Perhaps reflecting the country’s continual political problems, Belarus’s economic freedom fell back from last year’s high, and barely maintained its position in the moderately free category.

In addition to weaknesses in the judicial system, comparatively low scores on the property rights and government integrity indicators illustrate the need for the government to take additional steps to strengthen the rule of law. Belarus has pursued a gradual transition path, characterized by limited structural reforms and a modest growth of the private sector.

Economic growth during 2003–13 was accompanied by an impressive decline in the number of households below the national poverty line and a hike in household income among the bottom 40% of the population. Unfortunately, the factors that enabled Belarus’s past success are no longer in picture.

The capacity of capital accumulation to drive economic development is exhausted, the energy subsidies stemming from bilateral agreements with Russia are falling and will be withdrawn by 2024, and public debt ratios to GDP are hiking. Henceforth, improved living standards must come from higher productivity. As of December 1, 2020, 1,166 deaths had been attributed to the Covid-19 pandemic in Belarus, and the economy was forecast to contract by 3.0 percent for the year.
