Harare Institute of Technology was created in 1988 as a National Vocational Training Centre. The university, then transformed into a Technical College offering courses in automotive, electrical, and mechanical engineering, producing artisans capable of operating and maintaining machinery in the industry with little or no research or generation of new technology-related knowledge and skills.
Harare Institute of Technology is involved in research, design, manufacture, develop, incubate, transfer, and commercialize the technology for all sectors of the economy.
Harare Institute of Technology produces highly qualified technical human capital that is creativity-driven, project-oriented, understands all stages of the invention including idea generation and development and has the ability, stamina, and courage to set up high-tech enterprises.
The university is guided by the following fundamentals, it's zeal to develop HIT as the pioneer in technology based on multidisciplinary research and learning, taking advantage of alliances with the growing technology companies and research institutions in the country and beyond.

HIT has put an emphasis and their energy on the development and implementation of an effective Orientation Programme. The University offers guidance and basic counts assist in the development and implementation of an effective Orientation Programme. HIT offer guidance and basic counseling to Students in relation to their life activities on and off Campus; including students with special needs.
Harare Institute of Technology carries out research on students' welfare, financial issues and formulate short and long term intervention strategies and solutions including part-time and vacation employment special needs in around the city of Harare. The university is committed to the holistic development and realization of the full potential of students.

The University aims to empower students to effectively operate in society through the development of soft skills during operations and negotiations. The Office is responsible for student development through training/consultation in leadership, counseling and other developmental strategies for the students. To this end mentoring and implementation of skills are conducted through SRC Governance and opportunities in clubs and societies. The campus life office seeks to provide an environment, in which students not only learn but seek to offer solutions which are life skills important to students.

The University has rooms/accommodation that can cater for 400 students offered based on the level of venerability. The Harare Institute of Technology uses a preference system that prefers groups include first years, differently-abled students and students in the final year.
The University is particular over the delivery of services to Halls of Residence. The cost of on-campus is covered in the tuition fee.
The University through its facilities management supervises student activities in the halls of residence through Ordinance 15. Thus a student Sub Warden and a Part-Time Hostel Warden will assist students in need.
Subsidized meals are offered in the Institute Canteen on a purchase and eat basis. Student Affairs monitors the quality of catering services.
The university also provides provision of recreational facilities like in-door games in Halls of Residence in liaison with Sports and Recreational Department. Ensure the effective and efficient use of computer laboratories when installed in the Halls of Residence.
The institution also come up with programs for a residence that help develop a culture of respect and tolerance for other people’s rights and views in a diverse community and different nationality.
The Harare Institute of Technology is located in the heart of Belvedere which is a modern Indian community. There is a long line of private rental houses littered all over Belvedere that have tasteful rooms tailored to the student’s budgetary and aesthetic desires.
Set up at a walking distance of the university is one, two and three-bedroom houses costs somewhere between USD 50 to USD 150 depending on the building type and amenities.
The University aims to provide Adequate, Functional and State-of-the-art Sporting and Recreation Facilities. The activities include organizing intra-mural sports to provide structured contests, meets, tournaments and leagues imiting participation to campus members.
Also working with students to develop arts and cultural programmes. Providing structures for the developing and updating a cleaning-house of all community resources where students can volunteer. Coordinating recreational programming, facilities and equipment.
Food services are handled by premium caterers such as the Food lovers, Chicken Inn, Steers, KFC that serve students on campus with various meal options at different times of the day.
Dormitory occupants at HIT have meal tickets that they can use to get food from the dormitory cafeteria during breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Outside the university environment, there are restaurants, cafes and fast-food chains that serve local and continental dishes much to the admirations of the locals and visitors alike.
Sites such as the Long Chain and Marimba shopping center provide restaurants and shops that have different food joints from all over the world.
The university is located near the CBD and commuter buses are available 24 hours. Regardless, Harare is very simple where people take short brisk walks or jog across the town because of how easy and accessible the city is to everything, school, shops, entertainment centers, and even parks are all less than 1km away from each other.
Public transport, in general, is very cheap and prompt as there are buses and VAYA shuttle to use to get around. Taxis are also very active in the city and aren't that expensive either. Bus and Commuter Omnibus tickets cost less than RTGS$ 2
Harare is Zimbabwe’s Capital city, Harare is known as the sunshine city with it's modern and up to standard malls, restaurants and infrastructure. With beautiful scenery, magnificent architecture, good food both indigenous and exotic and walkable streets, you can't help but love this fascinating city.
There are about 2 million residents in Harare, It is a very large city which consists of different cultures, nationals, and people of all colors, interestingly HIT is located near the city.
The city is very safe and the people are warm and courteous, students move around freely and crime is nearly non-existent. The sunshine city, Harare the city that never sleeps.
