Admission Requirements at Gwanda State University

Undergraduate Programs:

  • Application form completed via RocApply
  • High school certificate
  • Proof of English Language knowledge: TOEFL(minimum score 75), IELTS (minimum band score 5.5), CEFR (minimum grade B2) or any other equivalent.
  • Passport photographs (scanned)
  • International passport or travel document
  • Transfer students must submit original copies of their transcripts detailing the courses taken at their previous institution.
  • Depending on the program applied for the student must possess at least a ‘C’ in all their required subjects for admission.
  • NB: Please note that all documents must be notarized by the appropriate body where the certificates were obtained.

Masters Programs:

Tuition and Scholarships at Gwanda State University

GSU has several scholarships awarded each year to students who meet the requirements. The onus is on the student to apply when these scholarships are advertised. Some of the scholarships are listed below;

Presidential Scholarship

The Zimbabwe government sponsors a scholarship scheme towards both local and broad-based students in Zimbabwe (Presidential Scholarship) . This scholarship seeks to reward high-flying students from different parts of the country and different countries around the world thus encouraging foreign relations in several educational spheres.

The scholarship is open to students in Bachelor programs currently enrolled at the University. The scheme covers the student's full or partial tuition fees and provides subsidized accommodation within the city. Every year the government releases about 3 000+ to cater to students to perform exceptionally well in their studies. Students from all walks to life are allowed to apply regardless of background, religion, sex, and age.

HigherLife Foundation Funding Opportunity

Higherlife Foundation is an organization founded in 1996, whose main purpose has been to support orphaned and vulnerable children in Africa through education and material support. Educational support has been provided through the Capernaum Scholarship for orphaned and vulnerable children and the Joshua Nkomo Scholarship for highly gifted children.

Higher life is funded by Econet Wireless therefore all students are called to apply for this scholarship. The scheme focuses on students doing science subject.therefore 70% is allocated towards sciences and 30% is allocated to students doing Arts and Commercial subjects.

Gwanda State University is a higher education institution that is in Gwanda, Zimbabwe. It is the brainchild of the government of Zimbabwe, created to fulfill the government policy to have a state university in each province.

In 2006 the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development appointed a Foundation committee for the Establishment of a State University in Matabeleland South Province. The University is located at a disused mine in Filabusi.

However, the main campus will be developed on an 87hectare piece of land in Gwanda Town. The university focuses on Mining and Agriculture. The University aims to develop enlightened human resources through world-class teaching, research, and innovation that is able to exploit factor endowment of their environment.

(GSU) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees in several areas of study.

GSU offers programs and courses in a range of areas, offering students the flexibility to combine degree programs, pick a specific course.

The university acknowledges that University life is not only about being behind the desk 24/7 therefore there are a lot of opportunities for one to boost their social life from joining different clubs or groups to getting involved in sports.

Guidance and counseling services:

The University aims to provide comprehensive, psychological, social, and emotional counseling and guidance to students, staff, and parents. Counseling Services are free and available to all students. Discontinued students and those who have deferred their studies may also come. The counselors are available on a 24/7 basis and therefore students should feel free to see a counselor.

Health services:

The Health Department supports and promotes student health in all aspects. The clinic is well equipped for basic medical needs, with a chief nursing sister employed to take care of the student health necessities. A sessional doctor is available to the clinic and attends twice a week, and also on call in case of any emergencies

Library Services:

The University has an on-campus library that presently has about 13 454 textbooks as well as E- resource services that have an immeasurable number of textbooks online. So, in terms of resources don’t stress we got you covered.

The Recreation Centre:

The recreation center provides the students with leisure options including a pool table, full DSTV subscription, a gym, and a tuck shop where students can purchase various items they may need. Adjacent to the recreation center is a football field where students play some of their ball games. Wi-Fi presence is available at this location, allowing students to remain connected as they take part in their various activities

Chaplaincy:

Chaplaincy seeks to meet the spiritual and psychological needs of the University community through the provision of the following:

  • Pastoral care, prayer, and counseling of both staff and students.
  • Registration and Coordination of all religious activities on Campus with the goal of developing religious and cultural tolerance and peaceful co-existence in the community.
  • Developing and promoting values of 'Ubuntu' through love, tolerance, and integrity in the community.

On Campus Accomodation at Gwanda State University

The student residences are composed of semi-detached blocks, each allowing 2 students per room sharing. Each unit is furnished and has a solar geyser fitted, with plans underway to expand in order to be able to cater to one student in each room. Wi-Fi is available at the residences, allowing students to study in the comfort of their rooms and not have to walk to remote areas in the dark to access internet services. Should there be any power issues, a generator is available as an alternative power. The University thrives, by all means, to ensure that the students have a home at school experience where all resources are readily available.

Campus Life

The main aim of campus life is to create a living and learning environment that addresses the quality of life for students. The university’s mandate is to provide housing services that are comfortable and enhance personal growth. The department also strives to provide social and educational programs and services such as counseling and providing disciplinary policies to ensure peace, order, and interaction.

Off Campus Accomodation at Gwanda State University

20 minutes’ walk from the University are houses to let, these are called the Students cottages. The University has partnered with different landlords in a bid to provide secure, good, and clean accommodation to its students. Off-campus accommodation comes with a bed, wardrobe, Wi-Fi, refrigerator, cooker, and study desk.

Off-campus accommodation is good in that one has their privacy also it can also be saving cost strategy as two-three students may agree to rent a room together and share the rent.


Sports at Gwanda State University

The department focuses on various sporting activities that relieve students from the accumulated academic stress and also for maintaining healthy styles. Both social and competitive sports and recreational activities are offered.

The department provides several sporting disciplines such as ball games, athletics,  throws, jumps, and indoor games. Students who excel in sports have the opportunity to compete at national regional levels.

The Department timeously prepares and serves a variety of affordable, nutritious, and balanced meals to students and strives to provide quality service and meals to the Gwanda State University community at large.

Food services are handled by premium caterers that serve learners on campus with various meal options at different times of the day. Students have meal tickets that they can use to get food from the cafeteria during breakfast, lunch, and dinner. 



Transportation at Gwanda State University

The University school bus is available daily to ferry students to town and back in case one has some business to attend to in the City center. Students are required to have bus tap cards to be able to access the bus. These are sold at a cost and come with credit enough for one to use the bus for the whole semester.


About Gwanda

Gwanda is a town in Zimbabwe located 126 kilometers southeast of the city of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe's second-largest city. It is the capital of the province of Matabeleland South, one of the 10 administrative provinces in the country. It has beautiful scenery, magnificent architecture, good food, and walkable streets which is very difficult to resist.

The city is very safe and the people are warm and courteous, students move around freely and crime is nearly non-existent. The City is quiet and peaceful with some recreational centers that one can visit in their free time. Some of the places include the amusement parks movie houses and swimming centers. The cost of living in Gwanda is relatively fair. The town is clustered with mall all over therefore creating a variety in the services that one can choose from.
