Education in VIETNAM

Education in Vietnam is a state-run system of public and private education overseen by the Ministry of Education and Training. education is divided into five levels which are preschool, primary school, secondary school, high school, and higher education.

Formal education in VIetnam consists of twelve years of basic education. Basic education consists of five years of primary education, four years of intermediate education, and three years of secondary education.

There are a number of institutions of higher education in Vietnam, offering a number of degree programs. Some of the degrees awarded include: an Associate Degree which is a three-year program delivered by junior colleges and by some universities as additional training programs.

A Bachelor's degree which is a four to six-year program of which six years is for students studying medical and dental sciences, five years for students of industrial engineering, and four years for the majority of other undergraduate degrees such as Social Sciences.

Most universities also offer master's degree which takes two years, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees which take four years

The adult literacy rate in Vietnam was estimated at 95% while the male literacy rate is 96.46%, and 93.6% for females as of 2018, according to UNESCO.

Important things to note

Here are a few things to take note of before you go out and about in Vietnam.

Money- The Vietnamese Dong (VND or ₫) is the official currency of Vietnam. Most payments are made with Vietnamese Dong (VND), but US dollars can also be used at some hotels, restaurants, tours, or other services

Bank/ Credit Cards- Debit and credit cards like Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted in Vietnam, especially at hotels, restaurants or shopping malls. You may however, be charged a 3% to 4% commission if paying with cards.

ATMs- are widely available in most major cities and tourist areas, however, chip-and-pin ATMs are not easy to find and it is best to bring a card with a magnetic stripe on the back. ATMs only dispense Vietnamese Dong (VND).

When withdrawing from Vietnamese ATMs, all foreign currencies will be automatically changed to Vietnamese Dong (VND), based on the prevailing bank rate at that time. Note that ATMs have limits

Vietnam is a country in Southeast Asia on the easternmost part of the Indochinese Peninsula. It has a total area of 331 212 km2.

Languages

Other minority groups speak a variety of languages, including Tay, Mưong, Cham, Khmer, Chinese, Nùng and Hmong. The Montagnard peoples from the Central Highlands speak a number of distinct languages, some of which belong to the Austroasiatic and Malayo-Polynesian language families.

English has also been increasingly used as a second language and the study of English is now obligatory in most schools and used as a language of instruction in some programs.

Must see places in VIETNAM

Halong Bay- is one of the world's most spellbinding sea views and was decalred a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Thousands of limestone islands sit within this bay in the Gulf of Tonkin, which were eroded into jagged pinnacles by wind and water action for years.

Hue- it is one of Vietnam's most historic towns, Hue is full of relics from the reign of the 19th-century Nguyen emperors. It sits along the banks of the Perfume River.

Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park- this is a dramatic karst mountain formation honeycombed with huge caverns, which are home to amazing stalactite and stalagmite displays. It is a world heritage site with the most popular destination within the park being the Paradise Cave, which extends for a staggering 31km underground.

Cu Chi Tunnels- the Cu Chi Tunnels are an extensive tunnel network used during the war by the Vietcong. They stretched for more than 25km, allowing the troops to operate and communicate in the area surrounding Ho Chi Minh City.

Ba Be National Park- Tranquil Ba Be National Park is an absolutely stunning place with the three interlinked Ba Be Lakes at its heart, rimmed by jagged karst peaks and thick forested slopes. Most visitors come here to take peaceful boat trips, kayaking or trekking on the hills.

About Vietnam's Economy

The economy of Vietnam is a socialist-based market economy, and is the 36th-largest in the world by nominal gross domestic product and the 23rd-largest in the world as measured by purchasing power parity.

Vietnam is one of the fastest growing countries in the world due to labour shifting from agriculture to manufacturing and services, private investment, a strong tourist sector, higher wages, and the fast accelerating urbanisation.

Nominal GDP was estimated at $341 billion, with a per capita of $3 500 as of 2020. GDP (PPP) was estimated at $1.0 trillion, with aper capita of $10 755 as of 2020. Inflation was estimated at 3.8%, and unemployment at 3.3% as of the same year.

Vietnam's economy is mainly based on large state-owned industries such as textiles, food, furniture, plastics and paper as well as tourism and telecommunications.

Agriculture contributes about 14.7% to GDP and employs 39.4% of the total workforce. Main crops produced include rice, pepper, sweet potatoes, coffee, cashew nuts, corn, peanuts, cotton, rubber and tea as well as aquaculture.

Industry contributes about 34.2% of GDP and employs 25.8% of the total Vietnamese workforce. Despite being new in the oil industry, the country has become the third largest Southeast Asian producer.

The country has also invested heavily in high value-added industries such as cars, electronic and computer technologies or softwares leading to a rise in Manufacturing by 10.9% year-on-year in 2019.

Services represent about 45.5% of GDP and employ 34.7% of the total workforce. Main services include tourism and telecommunications. Vietnam’s GDP contribution by sector as of 2019 showed the following:

Main export partners include China 19.6%, United States 18.1%, Japan 7.43%, and South Korea 7.09%, to mention but a few. Its imports were valued at $258.7 billion as of 2018.
