Firat University is a state university located in Elazig. Founded in 1975, the university takes its name from the Turkish name for the Euphrates River, which originates near Elazig.
The university is one of the largest academic institutions in eastern Turkey, with twelve schools, four research institutes, a national conservatory, three vocational high schools and twenty-one research centers, with a high emphasis on scientific and technological progress and research.
History
Fırat University, which has a deep-rooted history, started its education service in Elazig, which has a rich cultural life. Later on, it became a higher education institution that contributed significantly to the development of higher education in Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia by opening higher education institutions in the provinces of Bingöl, Muş and Tunceli, and in the Kemaliye district of Erzincan, and also by training staff for universities with its graduate activities.
Higher education in Elazig started with the Higher Technical School opened in 1967. In the same year, the decision of the Ankara University Senate to establish the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Elazig was approved by the Ministry of National Education.
Higher Technical School was transformed into Elazig State Engineering and Architecture Academy (EDMMA) in 1969, and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine started education in 1970 at Ankara University.
Higher education institutions in Elazig were gathered under a single roof under the name of “Firat University” on April 11, 1975, and started to operate within the framework of a structure consisting of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Science and Faculties of Letters. EDMMA, on the other hand, was transformed into the Faculty of Engineering and became a part of the University together with the Faculty of Medicine established in 1982.

Elazig is the most prosperous city in the eastern Anatolian region, due to its being recently founded under the name of Mamurat-ül Aziz in the 19th century by Sultan Abdulaziz to house some of Harput's overcrowding.
But it is known that the city has a much older history dating back to ancient Anatolian civilizations; Hurrus, Hittites, Urartus, Byzantines, Seljuks and Ottomans. Many of the artefacts from these periods can be seen in the Ethnography and Archeology Museum in the city.
The city is located on a plain near a mountain, at 1,067 meters above sea level and is surrounded by vineyards and gardens. Its population is over 580,000 (2018). Today Elazig is also a trading center for crops and livestock. Mining is another important economic resource in the province, the deep soil is rich in copper, iron ore, zinc, lead, chromium and magnesium.
Keban Dam on the Euphrates River The Keban and Karakaya Dams on the Euphrates River (Firat) River and their artificial lakes contribute to the growth and overall appearance of this rapidly evolving city. Keban Lake is the second-largest artificial lake in Turkey, after Ataturk Dam Lake. It was built in 1965 and produced its first electric power in 1974. Its annual output is 6 billion KW / hour.
One of the historical sights of Elazig is the Byzantine Fortress of the ancient city of Harput, 5 km north. There are also several mosques from the Seljuk period. Lake Hazar, 25 kilometres (15.5 miles) south of Elazig, is a good quiet place. Buzluk Cave, 12 kilometres northeast, is an interesting cave that stays cool in the summers and warm in the winters despite the harsh continental climate of the province. There is also a small ski resort on Hazarbaba mountain, 30 kilometres from the city centre.
