Ezzitouna University (UZ) is a public higher education institution in Tunisia. UZ opened its doors in 1956. In the capital of Tunisia Tunis, the main building of the university has its well deserved place. Many independent academic rankings put Ezzitouna University in the top 20 best universities in Tunisia. The University Zitouna is a university Tunisian based Montfleury ( Tunis ) but who for over a millennium located in the great Zitouna Mosque. According to the historian Hassan Hosni Abdelwaheb and if we refer to the date of the construction of the mosque, Zitouna would be the oldest educational establishment of the Arab world since a medersa is founded there as of 737. In fact, its pre - eminence in relation to all academic institutions on the five continents (125 years before Al Quaraouiyine of Fez , 235 years before al-Azhar of Cairo , 351 years before Bologna in Italy , which is the first and Former university in Europe) makes it the oldest university in the world.
