About Tunis

Tunis is the capital and largest city of Tunisia. It is located in the northeastern part of Tunisia, on Lake Tunis, connected to the port of La Goulette/Chalq al-Wadi by a canal leading to the Gulf of Tunis in the Mediterranean.

As of October 2019, the population of Tunisia is approximately 650,000. The metropolitan area of Tunisia is usually called the Greater Tunisia and has a population of approximately 2.7 million. The city has a total area of 213 square kilometers (82 square miles).

Today, Tunisia is the center of Tunisian political and administrative life. It is also the center of commercial and cultural activities in the country. There are two cultural centers in this city.

The remains of ancient Carthage are scattered in the Gulf of Tunis. Evocative collapsed columns and piles of marble rubble adjoin the panoramic view of the Mediterranean Sea, which is vital to the prosperity of the city.

Carthage is considered the most important trading center in the ancient Mediterranean region, and probably one of the richest cities in the ancient world.

Tunisia has several large parks, many of which were established by the French Protectorate in the late 19th century. The largest park, Belvedere, was built in 1892 and overlooks Lake Tunis. This is the oldest park in the country, built in a typical French landscape style.

The food market in Tunisia is a good introduction to the local culture, and the central region of Tunisia has a special atmosphere. The original building of the market dates back to 1891, and the hall after it is a newer building.

There are three separate areas: a huge fish hall where you can see fish that have been dramatically weighed, gutted, and cleaned; the central hall, selling spicy harissa, olive barrels, and spicy cheese blocks
