About Tokelau

Tokelau is a dependent territory of New Zealand made up of three tropical coral atolls in the South Pacific. The atolls, namely Atafu, Nukunonu, and Fakaofo lie mid-way between Hawaii and New Zealand and about 500 km to the north of Samoa.

It lies to the north of the Samoan Islands, east of Tuvalu, northwest of the Cook Islands, and south of the Phoenix Islands. They were formerly known as the Union Islands before it was changed to Tokelau Islands in 1946 then shortened to Tokelau in 1976.

The inhabitants are known as Tokelauans, generically recognized as being of Polynesian descent.They have a combined land area of 10 km2. As of 2016, Tokelau had an estimated population of 1499 people with a density of 115 people per square kilometer.

Tokelau’s Ethnic composition as of 2016 showed that 64.5% of the population were Tokelauan, 9.7% part Tokelauan or Samoan, 2.8% part Tokelauan or Tuvaluan, 7.5% Tuvaluan, 5.8% Samoan, 3.4% are other Pacific Islanders, 5.6% others, and 0.8% are unspecified.

The official languages in Tokelau are Tokelauan and English. The language composition as of 2016 was estimated as: Tokelauan 88.1%, English 48.6%, Samoan 26.7%, Taluvan 11.2%, Kiribati 1.5%, other 2.8%, and 0.8% unspecified.
