Timor Leste has 3 main universities, one of which is public, the other private, and the other one being a community-based university.
The National University of East Timor
This is a public university in East Timor, the only one in the country. It was established in 2000 and has six campuses, nine colleges, and seven research centers. it is the largest in Timor Leste in terms of the number of students, staff, size, and budget. Forming the country's intellectual elite, it is also a national reference in teaching, research, and extension, the tripods of higher education. the university was classified as the best university in its country in 2017 by the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities. It has its headquarters in the city of Dili, the national capital.

There are more than 37 higher education courses, organized in nine faculties as follows.
- Faculty of Agriculture
- Faculty of Exact Sciences
- Faculty of Social Sciences
- Law School
- Faculty of Economics and Management
- Faculty of Education, Arts, and Humanities. There are also three bodies linked to this faculty, namely

-English Language Center
- Faculty of Engineering, Science, and Technology: headquartered at Hera Campus;
- Faculty of Philosophy: substitute of the Philosophy College, is located at the Central Campus;
- Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences: headquartered at Caicoli Campus.

- Institute for Peace, Conflict and Social Studies
- Center for Gender Studies
- Center for Climate Change and Biodiversity.
Universidade da Paz
This is a private undergraduate university in Dili, the capital city. There are more than 2 615 Students. The university offers degrees in several disciplines including public health, engineering, social science, and the sciences. Faculties at the university include Public Health, Engineering, and Agricultural Technology. The university has over 150 Instructors, on both full-time and part-time contracts but few with doctorates, and 3 500 students.
Dili Institute of Technology
It is a community-based, non-profit education institution delivering higher education and vocational training. The Dili Institute of Technology is located in the state capital, Dili. The university was established in 2002.
It is officially recognized by the Agencia Nacional para Avaliacao e Acreditacao Academica. It is committed to education and training to assist in imparting skills to the nation in technical and business areas, building a workforce capable of meeting the demands of the private, public, and community sectors In 2008, the university was accredited by the Government of Timor Leste as a higher education institution with the total score of 92.88%.
