Pre-school education in Indonesia is under PAUD (Pendidikan Anak Usia Dini, lit. Early Age Education) which encompasses playgroup (Taman Bermain), and kindergarten (Taman Kanak-Kanak). It falls is under direct supervision of the Directorate of Early Age Education Development (Direktorat Pengembangan Pendidikan Anak Usia Dini).
Children can attend a playgroup from the age of two, and kindergarten From the age of four. these are not compulsory but are designed to prepare children for elementary school. There are more than 49 000 kindergarten schools in Indonesia and 99% of them are privately owned and run.
