Cost of living in Czech Republic

Generally, the cost of living varies from individual budgets and lifestyles, even further differential in one city to another. However, the consensus in the Czech Republic among many students is that life in the country is not as expensive as with many countries in Europe. We breakdown the general cost of living putting a few factors into consideration, here's an estimate of what it’ll cost you to live and study in the Czech Republic;

Accommodation:

The cost of accommodation slightly changes from one location to the other, houses closest to the city center cost a little bit more than the ones farther or around the suburbs.

  • 1 bedroom apartment - 8,000 CZK (€320)
  • 1 room in an apartment - 5,000 – 6,000 CZK (€200 - €240)
  • 1 shared room - 3,000 CZK (€120)
  • 2 bedroom apartment - 12,000 CZK (€480)

Public Transportation:

Public transportation in the country is generally very effective as there are buses, trams, metros, and a full network of train systems that covers the entire country. For local transportation, students can pay a subsidized price for a monthly card that allows them to move around at a cheaper cost.

  • 1-month transport card - 500 CZK (€20)
  • 3 months transport card - 1,300 CZK (€52)

Czech public transport services are well-structured and properly scheduled with key stops and an organized time system.

Grocery Shopping

Shopping for grocery items is done at a supermarket, grocery store of the weekly farmer’s market in the city center. Shopping for food is very affordable and many discount stores offer student-friendly prices. Typically the cost of some essential food and grocery products are;

Health Insurance:

The standard of healthcare in the Czech Republic is generally high and the country’s healthcare scheme has been praised as one of the best in the EU. The affordability and quality of healthcare treatment have even seen the country emerge as a popular destination for medical tourism in Europe. It is obligatory to have health insurance in the Czech Republic whether through a public or private health insurance provider.

Czech citizens, residents, and workers are automatically insured under the country’ s healthcare system other long-term visitors would have to use a private insurance company where the basic coverage cost around 1,000 to 1,500 CZK a month.
