Sweden Student Visa Requirements

Sweden Student Visa Requirements

The rules for visas and student residence permits differ for several countries, therefore students are advised to take note of the following details as to know where they fall under.

EU/EEA/Nordic/ Swiss citizens:

Students from the above mentioned countries do not need a visa to live, work and study in Sweden. However, they are required to report to the Swedish Tax Agency, for study periods longer than 12 months.

  • EU is an acronym European Union
  • EEA is an acronym for European Economic Area
  • Nordic countries include Denmark, Norway, Iceland, and Finland.

Other countries outside the EU/EEA/Nordic area

Citizens from other countries outside these areas have to check with their local embassies to determine if they require a visa for study periods of three months or less.

Some countries need a visa to come into Sweden and some others do not need a visa, as they can come into the country for 91 days.

This option is very viable for short term courses or exchange programs. However, for a study period of more than three months, there is a need for a student residence permit prior to arriving in Sweden.

When applying for a student residence permit, the following are usually required;

  • Proof of payment of the tuition fee
  • Official travel document or passport issued by their country
  • Letter of acceptance into a Swedish recognized institution
  • Proof of financial support for the duration of the study.
  • Fill and submit the online application
  • Proof of application fee payment

There is a waiting period before the visas come out and it is usually from 3 months upwards, so we advise students to begin their application process as early as possible.
