About South Georgia and the Sandwich Islands

South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands are a UK Overseas Territory, located SouthEast of the Falkland Islands. The territory was formed in 1985 and was previously governed as part of the Falkland Islands Dependencies. It consists of two areas, the main island of South Georgia which is approximately 170 km long and between 2 and 40 km wide.

South Georgiaoccupies an area of 3 755 km2. Its highest peak is Mt Paget which rises to 2 934 m. The South Sandwich Islands are a group of eleven small volcanic islands. Both islands combined, have an area of about 4190km2.

The islands have been largely uninhabited since 1982, but have a combined average population of about35 people.There is no permanent native population on the two islands, and the only inhabitants are British Government Officers, scientists, and support staff from the British Antarctic Survey who maintain scientific bases at Bird Island and King Edward Point, and museum staff at nearby Grytviken.The capital and largest settlement here is King Edward point.The islands had a population of 35 people as of 2019. The islands are administered from the Falkland Islands.

Must see places

Saint Andrew's Bay- this bay was first visited by Captain Cook in 1775. Here you can get to see the majestic King penguins which form huge breeding colonies. St Andrews Bay has about 150 000 birds.

South Georgia Museum-the South Georgia Museum is located in Grytviken and was established in 1991 by Nigel Bonner. Polar explorers Ernest Shackleton and Frank Wild are buried in Grytviken's graveyard. The museum has exhibits of early Antarctic explorers and displays of the 1982 conflict and more.

Mount Paget- this is the highest peak on the islands. It is almost always covered in snowy crowns. It rises to a height of about 2934 m.

Bird Island- it is called Bird Island because of its bird species found here. You can find Macaroni Penguins, Antarctic Prions, albatrosses, and Common Diving Petrels. More than 31 bird species have been recorded here including six species of penguin, four species of albatrosses, 13 species of smaller petrels, burrow-nesting petrels, and 5 waterbird species, to mention but a few.it is a magnificent sight to behold for bird lovers.

Grytviken Whaling Station- Grytviken means the Pot Bay and was the largest whaling station in South Georgia. It was closed down in December 1966 when dwindling whale stocks made it uneconomical.

Economic activity in South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands is very limited. The islands use the British Pound as their official currency. Fishing only takes place in line with scientific monitoring requirements to support the effective conservation and management of regional fish stocks, meaningthe islands place limits on the timing and quantity that may be caught, to protect them from extinction or overfishing.
