Tuition and Scholarships at Stellenbosch University International

Fees at Stellenbosch university consist of tuition fees and relative program and module costs.

SCHOLARSHIPS AT STELLENBOSCH UNIVERSITY

Stellenbosch University offers various financial aids for students and scholarships to assist students with their tuition fees and other academic costs that they may need to cover. Students can also access scholarships from private institutions.

Sports scholarships

These are special scholarships awarded to students who have excelled at various sporting activities.

Merit Bursaries- these are scholarships awarded based on the student's performance academically. Common merit bursaries at the university include first-year merit bursaries. These are calculated as a percentage of basic tuition fees.

SU Loan- these student loans are awarded to students from households with low to middle income between 350 000 to 600 000 per annum. These loans are interest-free and can be repaid at prime interest rates. Students get a 50% tuition fee loan.

DAAD Stellenbosch University Molecular Biology and Human Genetics Scholarships

This is a scholarship offered by DDA in cooperation with the Division of Molecular Biology and Human Genetics at Stellenbosch University. It offers up to 5 regional Master of Science and 4 in region scholarships for Ph.D. students at the division. These are due on the 15th of March 2021. The scholarship aims to foster strong, internationally oriented higher education systems in Sub-Saharan Africa which will contribute to Africa’s Sustainable Development. The scholarship is offered to students who wish to pursue studies in teaching or research at higher education institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Value of  Scholarship: fully funded.

Eligibility: the scholarship targets African students from any African country in Graduate and Postgraduate studies planning to pursue studies at the Division of Molecular Biology and Human Genetics.

Stellenbosch University Postgraduate Scholarship Program for International Students.

This is a scholarship program offered by Stellenbosch University every year for Honours, Masters, and Doctoral Students.

Eligibility: scholarships are available as per criteria set by the various faculties

  • International students are free to apply
  • Students must meet the minimum requirements for admission to the program as well as the scholarship requirements.
  • The university will ask for additional information to assess students' suitability for the scholarship at their discretion.

Iso Lomso Fellowship

This is a fully-funded fellowship that focuses on early career researchers and the brightest students from Africa. It aims at bridging the gap between Ph.D. completion and students becoming established scholars in Africa.

Criteria: students will be selected based on scholarly strength, academic excellence, and originality of the research project.it also bases selection on the relevance of the study, feasibility, and innovation, to mention but a few.

Eligibility: awardees must be African nationals from any African country.

  • Must be affiliated to a research or higher education institution in Africa.
  • Must be born after the 1st of January 1979.
  • Must be prepared to commence the first period of residency at STIAS.
  • Must have completed a post-doctoral fellowship or equivalent to a post Ph.D. research program.

Stellenbosch (Main Campus) - this campus is located in Stellenbosch, 50km from Cape Town and about 30km from the Cape Town International Airport. Here you can also find the faculties of Arts and social sciences, Science, Education, Agrisciences, Law, theology, Economic and Management Sciences, and Engineering. Stellenbosch’s main campus is located about 50 km from Cape Town and about 30 km from the Cape Town International Airport. The campus has several facilities and buildings. This is where you find the Administration of the University of Pretoria.

Student Support- For Student support services, there are several services and support centers located here including  JS Gericke Library, Neelsie Student Centre, the Centre for Student Recruitment, Centre for Student Counselling and Development for Students with Special Learning Needs (Disabilities), Unit for Psychotherapeutic and Support Services, Centre for Teaching and Learning, Division for Student Affairs, Language Centre, Campus Health Services, Maties Sport, the Coetzenburg Centre, SU Art Gallery, University Museum, Centre for Learning Technology, Language Centre (Writing Lab), Legal Aid Clinic, and the IT Hub, to mention but a few.

You can also find all the academic buildings and classes for the various faculties and specialized subject buildings. Buildings include laboratories, workshops, theatres, and computer centers, and many more. The main campus is an all-in-one hub of activity.

Tygerberg Campus- houses the faculty of medicine and health sciences. You can find several buildings and facilities for sport, academics, residences, get parking and other facilities.

Residences- the Tygerberg campus is smaller than the main campus and has fewer residences, one women's residence, and co-ed residences. The Co-ed residences include Hippokrates, Elective Students’ Residence, Huis Kerkenberg, Meerhoff, and Huis Ubuntu House. The only females only residence is Huis Francie van Zijl.

Academic Facilities- the campus has several academic buildings and facilities including the Fisan Building, the Education Building, Clinical Skills Centre, GERGA (Computer Centre), Clinical Building, Academic departments, Centre for Student Administration, and the campus Cashier office. The Medicine and Health Sciences Library at the Tygerberg campus is situated in the Teaching Block of the Faculty. The library provides innovative information services and learning spaces for the community here. The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Computer Users Area (FHSCUA) is a dedicated computer users’ area that offers students access to the internet. Postgraduate students working in the Tygerberg Hospital also have a computer area with full access to 24/7 internet service.

Sport and recreation facilities- the campus houses the Tygerberg Student Centre which houses a Sports Hall, Cafeteria, the Gymnasium, a Book Shop, and the Tygerberg Student Council offices. The Tygerberg Gymnasium caters to the health and fitness needs of the students. You can also find several sports fields for sport codes including tennis, rugby, hockey, cricket, soccer, netball, squash, rock climbing, and swimming.

Bellville Park Campus- houses the Business school and the School of Public Leadership. It is located close to the Cape Town CBD, meaning access is easier or the distance to be traveled by the students living out of campus is smaller. It offers a variety of postgraduate programs in Public and Development Management. Programs include Bachelor’s Degree Honors in Public Administration, Bachelors of Commerce Honors or Bachelor of Administration Honors in Public and Development Management, as well as a Master of Public Administration or Master of Commerce in Public and Development Management. At this campus, students can also enroll for executive short courses which provide credits towards the postgraduate degrees. Here you can find several buildings and facilities including the Stellenbosch University Bellville Park Campus Library, Postgraduate Business School, and Student Housing: Block A to C, academic buildings, and offices.

Saldanha Campus- houses the faculty of Military Science. This campus provides education for members of the Department of Defense. The campus offers ultra-modern residences and other facilities. The Faculty of Military Science is made up of 5 academic schools namely the School for Security and Africa Studies, the School for Defense Organisation and Resource Management, the School for Human Resource Development, the School of Science and Technology, and the School for Geo-spatial Studies and Information Systems.

Worcester Campus- houses the Ukwanda Rural Clinical School. It was officially opened with the launch of the Ukwanda Rural Clinical School of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences in 2012. Medical and health sciences students have the opportunity to complete their clinical training in a rural setting where they can bridge a gap. This is a small campus with a few buildings and facilities. Here you can find the Ukwanda academic building, Ukwanda Hostel to mention but a few. There are ample parking facilities for staff and the public as well. The Ukwanda Rural Clinical School offers services and facilities and also provides training in health-related services. The campus includes a modern and well-equipped academic building and a residence for up to 40 students.

On Campus Accomodation at Stellenbosch University International

Stelenbosch University has about 34 residence halls. These are divided between males and females and some mixed. Accommodation is however limited and comes on a first come first served basis and other arrangements including nationality and first-year study. Other students can find alternative accommodation in surrounding areas in apartments, hostels, or private homes. These on-site residences offer laundry rooms, dining halls, common rooms with TV, lounge area bathrooms, and courtyards and gardens for play and relaxation.

Off Campus Accomodation at Stellenbosch University International

On the other hand, off-campus accommodation (within range of the university) with similar features is available, with prices depending on the specific need of the student. Costs also include water and electricity bills. There is also a chance to rent accommodation from a private landlord or estate agent.


Sports at Stellenbosch University International

Stellenbosch University offers a variety of sporting codes including athletics, basketball, canoeing, gymnastics, cricket, cycling, field hockey, fencing, golf, soccer, judo, badminton, netball, squash, kendo, rowing, rugby, surfing, swimming, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, Waterpolo, yachting and many more.

These include a gymnasium, swimming pools, the Danie Craven stadium, and a multi-purpose center, the Coetzenburg center, which hosts several ceremonies and indoor sports. It has indoor courts, a gymnasium, a football complex, and two artificial hockey stadiums.


About Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch is a town located in the Western Cape Province in South Africa about 50km to the east of Cape Town. The town was affectionately known as the city of oaks due to the many oak trees that line its streets.

It is one of the oldest towns in South Africa, the second largest. The town has traces of Dutch colonial Architecture and here you can find streets lined with galleries, boutiques, hotels, shops and hotels,s and cafes, to mention but a few. The majority of people in the town speak Africans, and a sizeable number speak English while a few speak Afrikaans.

Stelenbosch is a town surrounded by wine valleys and is known for viticulture research. Stellenbosch Academy is a known sporting facility that hosts several rugby teams including the Springbok sevens and western province.

Other sporting codes hosted in the town include triathlon, and track and field sports, and cycling, to mention but a few.

Getting Around in Stellenbosch-there are several ways to get around Stellenbosch.

train- travelers to Stellenbosch can also use the train service. CT Trains travels from cape town to Stellenboch at a cost of about R8 to R18 per ticket.  This journey will be about an hour and 20 minutes long.

Buses- when traveling to Stellenbosch, one can use a bus. Citiliner has a bus that travels to Stellenbosch from cape town that runs twice daily. It is an hour-long journey that costs R120 to R170 per trip. 

Taxis- taxis are available in Stellenbosch, these can be booked in advance. To get from cape town to Stellenbosch it may take about 38 minutes to get to Stellenbosch from Cape Town.

Campus shuttle- the Stellenbosch University offers shuttle service for students from service divisions or campuses that are on the outskirts.
