Projected to become the “Singapore of Africa”, the Central African country of Rwanda has emerged as an up-and-coming academic hub for international students.

Since being elected in 2000, and re-elected for three consecutive terms, Rwandan President Paul Kagame's bold economic reform program has boosted the country's economic reputation and international profile.

As EJ Insight, the online English language news website of the Hong Kong Economic Journal, explains, “Apart from making an all-out and concerted effort to turn Rwanda into another Singapore on technological levels, Paul Kagame has also been working relentlessly to follow Singapore’s footsteps in another aspect: becoming a ‘garden city’ in Africa by promoting green economy across the nation.”

"For example, a monthly and nationwide 'house-sweep' has been mandated by the Rwandan government, not to mention a complete ban on the use of plastic bags."

And with ambitious solar energy plans and environmental entrepreneurial opportunities, it’s no surprise that Rwanda is gaining international candidates for its university programs. Ideal for study breaks, the country is home to some of the world’s most beautiful national parks.

For example, the Volcanoes National Park. Located in the far northwest of Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park protects the steep slopes of this awesome mountain range and is home to the endangered mountain gorilla and a rich mosaic of montane ecosystems, which embrace evergreen and bamboo forest, open grassland, swamp, and heath!

Bursting with culture and heritage, the country also commands numerous museums, art galleries, and annual festivals such as the Rwanda Film Festival, better known as 'Hillywood’.

However, on the higher education front, there is also growing interested in the local universities have to offer foreign students.

Chatting to Claude Gakwandi, CEO of the Study in Rwanda program, The New Times discovered that the expanding the country’s economy could be key as to why international students are setting their prospects on Rwanda, as it provides great global research and working opportunities.

Because of the training these students receive in cross-cultural treats and global studies, they will be best suited to take on positions in the Rwandan and foreign corporations with strong international networks.

As a foreign investment to and from China continues to grow, more and more well-informed international students will be needed to staff key positions in marketing, government relations, business strategy, among others.

About Rwanda

Where and what is Rwanda? If you are still pondering then welcome to our RocApply About Rwanda information page. Let’s get started…

Rwanda is a landlocked country located in central east Africa. Approximately four hundred students study abroad here each year. The country is located just a few degrees below the equator but has a rather mild climate due to the high elevation.

Rwanda is rather a small country and can be compared to the size of the state of Maryland (in the USA). Mountains dominate the landscape but the country is also home to many lakes.

Rwanda is considered a safe travel destination and many travelers visit the country to enjoy tracking the mountain gorillas, which can be seen in Volcanoes National Park!

Perhaps most well-known because of the unfortunate events which took place during the 1994 genocide, the country is in fact multifaceted and has pulled itself up by the bootstraps and has a great deal to offer.

It’s successfully on the road to recovery and trying to move on from the past so it seems unfair that Rwanda is characterized by the actions of only a few.

There are a host of scenes and activities on offer for visitors to the region. Lovers of the outdoors will be pleased with the diversity of nature-based excursions on offer.

From hiking and trekking to rock climbing, there’s so much of the natural environment to immerse into. There are also a few tamer activities such as attending the National Ballet of Rwanda for those foreigners who are less inclined to take part in adventurous feats.

Understandably, much of the country’s sites are dedicated to its recent past. Memorials and museums not only commemorate the events and pay respect to those who were killed but also help to enlighten the world to make sure something like this never happens again.

Many of the other sites are located in the country's several national park areas.

Considering everything Rwanda has endured, it’s this remarkable how warm and welcoming the people are. Students should expect to have long conversations with local traders and even to be invited to more than one home for dinner.

Accommodation options are varied, catering to all needs and plans. Students have a choice between luxury accommodation and resorts, and budget backpacker establishments and low-cost guest hostels.

Navigating Rwanda is only achievable by road as there are no train lines and the domestic air services are limited and far between. Car rentals are available but there’re no international companies on offer.

There are, however, a few reputable local rental agencies such as Rocapply Rental Car which do just as good a job. Taxis can be flagged down from the side of the road and prices should be decided upon before the journey begins. We hope you enjoy your stay in Rwanda!

About Rwanda's Economy

The knowledge of economic performance for a given country can serve a long way in choosing which country to pick for a semester abroad! To this aid, we have made sure you keep well-informed through our Rwanda Economy guide what entails domestic and foreign income here.

The information is overall but you may need to read more on the reviews from trusted sources to gain a deeper understanding of the economic performance.

The economy of the country has undergone rapid industrialization due to a successful governmental policy. Since the early 2000s, Rwanda has seen an economic boom improving the living standards of many Rwandans.

The Government's progressive visions have been the quickening factor for the fast transforming economy. The President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, has noted his ambition to make Rwanda the ‘Singapore of Africa’.

The transport sector is one of the key engines of growth in an economy. Improving the quality and reliability of transport infrastructure and services is a major building block for eliminating transport costs, attracting domestic and foreign investment, and expanding access to economic opportunities.

The Government of Rwanda recognizes that more needs to be done to tackle existing constraints in the transport sector and to offset the geographical bottlenecks which continue to drive the high transportation costs in Rwanda relative to the region

The country’s economic freedom score is 70.9, making it's economy the 33rd freest in the 2020 Index. Its overall score has decreased by 0.2 points due to a drop in the government integrity score.

Rwanda is ranked 2nd among 47 countries in the Sub-Saharan Africa region, and its overall score is well above the regional and world averages.

More than twice has the Rwandan economy been rated mostly free after years in the moderately free category. GDP growth has been booming for the past five years, driven by export-focused agriculture and a high level of private investment inflows.

Recent pro-business regulatory reforms include improvements in getting electric power and enforcing contracts, among others, but the resolution of insolvency was made more difficult.

A 2018 labor act contained a mixture of pro-employee and pro-business provisions the ultimate effect of which is uncertain. The government subsidizes agriculture, maintains price controls, and subsidizes power for 20% of the population that has access to electricity.

The total value of exports and imports of goods and services equals 51.5 percent of GDP. The average applied tariff rate is 7.3 percent, and 30 nontariff measures are in force.

Most sectors are open to foreign investment, but the investment regime is still evolving and has not yet produced a dynamic full-growth of new investment. Despite some progress, the cost of financing remains high, and access to banking services is limited.
