An overview of the general cost of living in Qatar is very favorable compared to many Arab countries and around the world. It goes beyond the fact to say that Qatar is a wealthy nation and the people enjoy the government’s wealth, with many expenses being subsidized or even free for its citizens and its residents. Students coming into the country need not bother about spending too much, as accommodation is the only true cost that they need to worry about.

Housing in Qatar:

Students can pursue accommodation on their school campuses for very reasonable amounts. However, students can also opt to live in areas outside of their school vicinity for personal reasons. This option is very viable but comparatively costlier than on-campus accommodation.

Private student houses are available with single, double or even triple bedroom choices. Rental cost in Qatar greatly depends on the location, the apartment type and the facilities provided.

Rent in Qatar for a single bedroom or a studio can cost about QR 2,800 going up to QR 7,000 for a month. Most students opt to rent a bed space in a student apartment which costs about QR 900 to QR 1200. Noteworthy, students must be aware that many houses in Qatar come unfurnished except for luxurious apartment complexes.

Transportation in Qatar:

This is one of the inexpensive but very effective aspects of living in Qatar. Petroleum is very very cheap in the country and as such both public and private transportation come at a very small price.

The conventional means of moving around in Qatar is by bus, by private taxi or by Karwa taxi. Typical bus fare for one full trip can go for QR 3 to QR 10 depending on the location.

Taxi fares range from QR 10 (basic fare) to QR 16. Petrol price is QR 1.85 which stands at one of the cheapest in the world. Used cars are also considerably inexpensive in Qatar such that many students opt for a car while in school in Qatar.

Feeding in Qatar:

Food takes quite the chunk of the actual cost of living in Qatar. As of now, Qatar is heavily dependent on food items imported from other countries and because of this food prices are usually more expensive than elsewhere. Food items, beverages, household items, baked goods and canned food, fruits and vegetables, drinks and spices are all quite steep in Qatar.

Eating out in a fancy restaurant can cost between QR 100 to QR 200 depending on the number of individuals or the restaurant. Fast food restaurants typically cost QR 20 to QR 35 for a meal.

Utilities and social amenities in Qatar:

In Qatar, water, electricity, and gas are very much subsidized across the country with very low tariffs. Since Qatar is extremely hot in the summer, there is usually cooling cost which is similar to heating costs in many western countries.

Internet and phone bills are also very subsidized for the residents of the country, better still students enjoy many benefits and student plans. A general cost of internet service and phone tariff go for QR 200 to QR 450 on a monthly basis.
