Here are some useful information about shopping in Portugal;

‘Supermarket’ is called ‘Supermercados’ in Portuguese, this can help with easily recognizing them as a new student. There are a variety of supermarket chains in the country that offers various items at various prices.

Popular supermarket chains in the country are Apolonia Suoermercados, Pingo Doce, Pão de Açucar, Minipreço, SPAR, Lidl, Continente, Intermaché, and many others. These markets are the largest and most ubiquitous in several cities across Portugal

Lidl is a very popular supermarket chain across Europe and as such one of the cheapest supermarket chains. Students shopping is fantastic here as they carry everything from groceries to stationery.

Minipreço is a very economic supermarket with more than 500 outlets around the country. The chain sells different items and has really good discounts for students as well.

Most supermarkets in Portugal open as early as 8 am and close quite early as well. Closing hours for shops are between 7:30 and 8:00, different from some other countries. On the plus side, they are also open during the weekends and on holidays.

Shopping online is one quick and effective tool that students now make use of, it is efficient and in some cases even cheaper.

Local farmers market opens for a few days during the week and has different grocery and other items at very discounted prices. Local market shopping is very huge in Portugal, as agriculture is one of their mainstays.

The food is usually very fresh and the farmers are always so generous, get in on this and save a chunk of money from your monthly expenses.

One secret to shopping for winter clothes in Portugal is to shop two months before the season begins, the prices are way more favorable.

Every city has its own local market, familiarize with the environment and the locals.

International markets are also available usually in the city centers, and they carry food items and spices from other places in Asia, the Middle East or Africa.
